Lowell: We won't go to Japan if staff doesn't get paid

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell confirmed to the Globe’s Jackie MacMullan that the team voted unanimously this morning not to make the scheduled trip to Japan or play its final spring training game against Toronto this afternoon unless the coaches, training staff, and equipment staff were going to be compensated for making the trip to Japan.

''When we voted to go to Japan, that was not a unanimous vote,'' said Lowell, "but we did what our team wanted us to do for Major League Baseball. They promised us the moon and the stars, and then when we committed, they started pulling back. It's not just the coaches, it's the staff, the trainers, a lot of people are affected by this.
"I'm so super proud of this team. When we put it to a vote it was unanimous, we're all in agreement that we're not going to put up with this.''

Manager Terry Francona and his players were extremely irked after learning the team's coaches were not going to get the $40,000 stipend they assumed they’d be getting for making the trip to Japan (players will also receive a payment). Francona had informed the coaches they’d be getting the stipend.

However, the Sox manager was told by members of the Oakland coaching staff that they were not being paid. Francona had thought it was unusual that one team’s staff would be paid and the other not. So he checked into it and found he and his coaches were getting nothing.

The Red Sox are scheduled to leave Fort Myers after today’s Grapefruit League finale against the Blue Jays (12:05 p.m.), but now it appears both the game and the flight are somewhat in question.

"That's one of the things we've been talking about," David Ortiz said of the potential Japan boycott. "It's really [expletive] up."

The scene here in Florida is an odd one, for sure. There have been conversations going on about the issue among the Red Sox staff, including one between Lowell and Francona and between Lowell and Theo Epstein. Meanwhile, there are a couple hundred suitcases outside the locker room being tagged and weighed for the trip to Japan.

Francona said he doesn't care about himself but that in some cases the $40,000 represents some two-fifths of a coach’s salary. The Red Sox are scheduled to face the Oakland Athletics in two season-opening games in Tokyo on March 25 and 26.

Why does MLB even have these games over there, Just have scrimmage games ..there is no reason to have a season game there.

I agree with Lowell, The coaches should be paid also.

Re: Lowell: We won't go to Japan if staff doesn't get paid

      More:
FORT MYERS, Fla. At this hour, Theo Epstein, Terry Francona and Mike Lowell at least, are discussing this fluid situation here where players have threatened not to play today's 12:05 p.m. exhibition game with the Toronto Blue Jays, if coaches and training staff aren't paid a $40,000 per man stipend to make the trek to Japan.

The players are adamant that this was negotiated in their agreement to plain Japan, and now it's been reneged. The Sox are scheduled to bus to the airport for their flight to Chicago and then Japan at 4:45 p.m.

Oakland general manager Billy Beane was driving to his office in Oakland when informed about possible boycotts by Red Sox players not to play today's final exhibition game or to take the trip to Japan is coaches aren't paid the $40,000 they thought they were promised.

"I first found out about it yesterday when I dinner with my manager Bob Geren, and he told me about it," Beane said. "I think everyone on our staff, from what I was told was disappointed. I think that's safe to say."

Asked whether he knew of his players or coaches taking the action the Sox have he said, "I'm not aware of that. I'll probably no more when I get into the office. Looks like the Red Sox players have mobilized their forces."

Geren is the one who informed Francona that coaches and support staff, like trainers, were not being paid. This sent Francona into a frenzy because he had promised his coaches they would be paid. Francona said "I had to go back and tell the coaches not to spend the money some of them had already spent."

First base coach Luis Alicea said he appreciates the support of the players but felt the entire issue was "embarrassing."

"We all like to feel as if we're part of the team We help the players and we appreciate what they're trying to do. We thought this issue was resolved a long time ago. To have it come down to the final day is embarrassing. That's about all I can say about it."

Curt Shilling was one of the players involved in the negotiations last Fall.

"We had an agreement. We had an agreement in October," Schilling said. "I was one of the five or six players on the phone call. Some of the things they promised they've already taken away. From the players point of view, we all felt the same way. They can't do this. This can't happen."

Schilling said a few things have already been "taken away" by major league baseball, according to the pitcher.

"In October when we were on the phone call, they wanted this trip to happen so badly and now they've fallen by the wayside time and time again. The things we were adamant about at the time we reiterated time and time again and it was never an issue."

      What things?

"Different personal things that were supposed to happen from an accommodations standpoint. Little things that tend to make trips like this easier. It's been more than one thing. Hopefully, it's just miscommunication, and it will be fixed," Schilling said.
While Mike Lowell confirmed the players voted not to play today's exhibition game with the Blue Jays if the issue is not resolved, Schilling wouldn't go that far.

"We've met and we've talked. We're trying to get the issue resolved right now," he said.

I'm confused, was each staff member getting $40,000 to go? If so **** them, that is way too much for such a short trip. Truthfully it is ridiculous to further compensate the players other than food money too.

I think the issue is that the MLB had told Francona and the players that the rest of the staff would be getting some kind of stipend, when in reality, they won't be. The players didn't want to go to Japan in the first place, but they agreed to go if certain "requirements" were met, that have since been revoked.

These players are under contracts that specify they do special promotions for the team and MLB, they shouldn't have say in this matter. As I said I think the staff should be given some additional compensation, but certainly not $40,000 each.

Yea 40K is a lot but you gotta think one minute about it. If you were informed you was gonna get 40k then "Something" happened after the decision you'll be a little ticked off too. And i praise the Red Sox players for looking out for their staff, if some disagree on the team then everybody does, which is a real thing TEAM suppose to do.

The thing is though in reading this it doesn't appear that MLB actually promised that.

You brought up a Valid point. I just realized that after i re-read it. And David Ortiz for the record is a little to outspoken for my taste man, you can b outspoken to certain degree but when your statements has the potential of being possibly heard or read nationally, you have to reword what the hell you say.

Watching ESPN right now (Sox-Jays was supposed to be on, so they're live from Ft. Myers), and apparently another issue is this:

Over the course of the Sox' 19-day trip (Japan, LA, Oakland, Toronto) to start the season, MLB told the Sox that families would be welcome throughout the whole trip, which has been apparently been reneged by MLB.

Also the fact that in previous trips to Japan (MLB has been doing this for a while), all staff has been compensated in the past.

You know if MLB put this in writing I might feel bad for Boston, if not the Red Sox deserved to be mocked for their stupidity.

I want to watch the Jays

Random weird note: In MLB '08, for some reason this game doesn't show up on the spring training schedule, and both teams have a random off day. But the rest of the Jays spring training schedule is perfect. Its like they knew.

Having trust in being told something has no place in big business! What a joke.
