Re: Lowell: We won't go to Japan if staff doesn't get paid
It's not that at all, it's getting something in writing so that a party doesn't make wild accusations about an oral contract down the road. Somewhere in this ordeal the Red Sox and A's had to sign something with MLB.Comment

FORT MYERS - The Sox just announced that the first pitch will be thrown at 1:10. There's been some type of settlement in the coaches dispute or at least progress made. We'll have more as news comes out.It looks like a crisis may have been averted. There's no official word on the Japan trip, but the Red Sox are back on the field stretching and an announcement has been made that the Sox-Blue Jays game will start at 1:10 p.m.
More in a bit.Comment

YAY! I think i'll go watch the game now.
BTW I agree with MassNole on this issue. The Red Sox players are silly if they take everything MLB says to heart. Sometimes business is business and you NEED to have the paperwork done.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Lowell: We won't go to Japan if staff doesn't get paid
Their CBA grants them say in this matter, and we all know the Player's Union is more powerful than the commissioner's office when it comes to baseball. Going to Japan for a couple of games is more than just a promotion as it affects competitive balance (no one else has to make a trip like that other than the A's and Red Sox), not to mention it costs the home team a lot of money in lost games. I don't see anything wrong with what they did, if MLB said it was going to pay the staff and then decided not to then shame on MLB. Forty grand to most ballplayers and Francona is chump change (though some of the rookies making the minimum probably like having it) but to a coach it's a pretty significant perk. That and it seemed more like a matter of principle and integrity than anything. The players wanted to make a statement that they feel their staff is a part of the team and should be treated as such. In the end, MLB tried to pull a fast one and got caught, at least they resolved the issue without compromising what should be a good PR campaign for the league overseas.Comment

I like how Theo bashed the Yankees for bitching about the Japan trip a few years ago, and then the Red Sox do this.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment

Re: Lowell: We won't go to Japan if staff doesn't get paid
I tuned in to watch them play the BJays today and I had to watch about an hour of crap for this lol. I understand they are backing up their managers and faculty staff but these are things that shoul dbe dealt with outside of playing time. Yes it just came up, and yes there was a miscommunication, but as professionals, I think they could have worked this out way sooner.
Because of ineffective communication, 7000+ fans, the BJays, and the thousands of people at home had to deal with it.
Is it the end of the world? Am I whining?? That's your call. I'm just stating that as a professional organization full of "professional" people, I would certainly hope that they took this as a learning experience and don't let this happen in the future.
