I live in Tampa and most people who follow the Rays can tell you, one of the biggest differences in the team this year is THE BULLPEN! I lie not when I tell you the bullpen last year blew about 20 games easily ! 20 game puts them at about .500 baseball. So basically what you're seeing this year is a very competent bullpen and the result is wins. Plus last year, Joe Maddon was always so concerned about everyones pitch count until he messed up good pitching situations.

The Florida Marlins. Their opening day payroll was by far the lowest in the majors. They lost their 2 most notable players in Cabrera and Dontrelle and really did nothing to replace them.

22-14 and in first place. I have no idea how their doing it and don't expect it to last but they are the biggest surprise so far this year.

The Rays are doing well, but people who follow baseball know they have a ton of young talent and are finally getting some pitching to go along with it.
      Good job! Good effort!

They don't. San Diego does, followed by Seattle. The Padres and Mariners are the two biggest surprises as far as being terrible.

Oakland won't keep it up, but who thought they'd have the 2nd best record in the AL at this point? They're the biggest pleasant surprise IMO.

The Giants. They're not as crappy as the experts made them to be.

The Mariners will always be horrible.
The Rockies had a great run towards the end of the season and played the best ball for two months not for a season last year so that doesn't suprise me at all.
The Yankees have struggled as well.

but let's just see how the pitching is holding up in August when most of those young arms will have pitched the most innings in their young careers.

Its funny how the A's surprise people every year but it happens every year. When are people going to stop listening to these so called experts.

Every year people say the A's won't last but they keep playing good ball despite their payroll and you stupid fans.

                              Was that necessary?

                              Anyway my surprises:

                              1. Rays- their pen has been fantastic and is the biggest difference from last year. Shields and Kazmir make a nice duo at the top of the rotation and it will look even better with Niemann and Price soon. Nasty

                              2. Cardinals- everybody counted them out in the offseason but LaRussa has them going.

                              3. Twins- they're playing damn fine ball right now and are relying on Livan Hernandez as their ace pitcher. They'll come down to earth but they're fun to watch.

                              4. Marlins- I'm shocked they've been able to keep their winning up over the month but I anticipate they'll come back to the rest of the pack soon.
