Surprised nobody has started a thread on this. Future hall of famer and one of my favorite players of all-time is retiring. So long Mike. The end of an amazing career.

IMO the biggest suprise out of the FA not to sign. Bonds has legal troubles so I can see that.

Piazza did not have a great season last year (.275.8,44) in 80 or so games, but I would think a team would need a dh. If he would be able to duplicate his '06 season he could help someone.

Thanks for the great years as a Met...

got to see him hit a triple dead CF, as well as at the game where he passed Fisk as HR leader of catchers (pretty cool that I was there with my dad)..

Also, that famous HR off the Braves right after 9/11 stands out in my mind..

My fondest memory was in 96, with both Piazza and Caminiti going for the MVP award and the Padres and dodgers going for the pennant. Every game was not only against the Dodgers but Piazza's MVP award as well..... Good Times.

A great offensive threat through most of his career and a helluva guy to boot. I know he came up with the Dodgers but i'll always associate him as a Met and I agree with others that he should be a HOF'er.

It's too bad that some people tried to pry into his private life and throw out accusations of his being gay. At least he handled that with grace and class.

They were discussing Piazza on PTI earlier today and how Piazza got all of his great offensive numbers during the steroid era. Neither Wilbon or Kornheiser implied that Piazza had used or was invoved with steroids, but that he is lumped in with the other sluggers of the era and how that might effect his getting in to the HOF.

I don't beieve Piazza will suffer the fate that some might and not get in. He was never implacated in any wrong doing as far as steroids or any other "supplements". He put up insane offensive numbers at probably the most physically grueling position on the diamond. He's definitely getting in.

Who else here thinks Piazza will wind up on ESPN or Fox sports before long?.

HOF no doubt...

I was down at the pile when that game was going on......and all of a sudden it started going around that Piazza hit that homerun in the game....I remember seeing the highlight and getting the chills and really emotional. Tough time and while at the time it didn't really help.....in retrospect it was pretty special.
We used to meet at the Marina outside of Shea to get the buses to go down to the Trade Center to dig....and one day they sent us over to the Shea parking lot to get a bunch of donations(water..food etc) from EVERYWHERE(I can't tell people around the country enough how much that meant) and the Mets were helping us load and unload the trucks...Piazza made it a point to talk to as many of us as he could. Real good guy IMO.
First ballot HOF'er....best hitting catcher ever...no doubt.
