Mets also let go of pitching coach Rick Peterson and 1st base coach Tom Nieto. I don't think this was handled in the greatest fashion, but maybe it'll bring life to the Mets

The Mets are starting to hit, the starting pitching is strong, the bullpen is so-so......just when they look like they are coming about....they fired him.

We are only 5 1/2 GAMES OUT!!! In June!!!!

Now if they lose 10 straight......NOW WHAT!!

I can't blame Omar for all of this; it's been clear that the Wilpons wanted Willie gone regardless. All the embarrassment that this causes comes from the top... I'm sure Omar was willing to stand pat with Willie at the helm, but the Wilpons forced his hand.

Wow what a classless and stupid move. I watched some of the Mets game last night and I thought they were starting to come around. The manner in which they fired Willie (e-mail) was cold and heartless.

The Wilpons are a bunch of jackasses and if I were Minaya i'd resign over this stupidity.

Willie and company were not fired via e-mail. The beat writers were notified via e-mail early this morning. Willie and the other coaches who were let go were advised of such in their hotel rooms after the game.

It's a circus, to be sure, but let's at least get the facts straight.

Apparently from what (or how) I understand, it was Jeff Wilpon and Tony Bernazard who basically wanted Willie to be gone - Fred is just fading into the background at this point as owner.

I mean look at the stupid things they did.. they fired the hitting coach last year (while they were in first place), to replace him with Rickey Henderson -- great move there - NOT.. Now, after basically letting him dangle for several weeks, fire Willie after the first game of a West Coast trip..

They had several opportunities to do this in an appropriate manner - this certainly was not one of them
