Keeper. The batter/pitcher interface is intuitive and puts more work on the pitching aspect of the game. Much like shanking a golf shot in a video golf game or choking on a crucial Madden field goal the pitching meter allows you to "choke" on a big 3-2 count by throwing a ball or "hanging" a pitch by not falling within the green accuracy zone on your second meter button press. If the pitch is "hanged" there will be a "tip off" to the batter by a colored ball that will be either clear(falls in neutral hitting zone of that particular batter),red(hot zone of hitter),blue(cold zone of hitter)or a ball with a yellow "X"(out of strike zone). All of these fat pitches are very hittable, even the cold zones. I hit a double on an inside yellow "X" ball that was out of the strike zone. These colored balls correspond to the hit zones within the strike zone for a given batter.

Re: Guys, Straight up: Is MVP A KEEPER?
I say it's a keeper.
I was only going to buy one baseball game this year, and that was going to be WSB 2K3. But, the favorable comments I've read in this forum gave me an irresistable urge to pick up MVP. I haven't been disappointed.
While the game isn't without it's share of flaws (every game has some), the pitcher/batter interface of MVP is an absolute treat. There's a certain sense of control over the outcome of an at-bat. It is especially satisfying when you strike out a batter ... you really feel like you've earned it.
Simply put, the new "innovations" do not detract from the game. In fact, they make it a refreshing and very fun experience ... IMHO ;-)
Games are supposed to be fun. To me, this one is!!Comment

Re: Guys, Straight up: Is MVP A KEEPER?
Gotta say no to it being a keeper, but I like more "simmy" games w/ realism.
-THat being said, for two-player, for a quick play (ex. 1 hr. at a time), or if you like arcade gameplay, this is the game to get.
-Problems that kill it for me:
1)simming season = too many unrealistic stats
2)canned hits (way too many hits are the same, very little variety compared to other titles)
3)no real diff. between star players in the field (ex. rolen and joe credy will play D exactly the same, Jenkins can make shoestring catches as well as A. Jones, etc.).
4)Once you play it for a while, you can hit R. Johnson as easily as as say, Joe Roa of Phil., and thats with Tampa Bay and on hardest skill levels.
5)Lots of fielding screw-ups: on occasion, a player diving for no reason and missing the ball, infielders receiving a throw in time to throw out the baserunner but for some reason are standing 3 ft. outside the bag and miss the tag (and no, its not for a valid reason like a bad throw...which would be fine).
-List goes on, basically, for those who consider themselves baseball simmers, this title ain't even close.
Again, I'm not ripping the title, it does a lota things great, def. best batter/pitcher interface, just, in long term playing, won't get the job done for me.Comment

Just somethings to clear up.
1) simmed season - ya not all that reaslitic nothing like B.Bonds getting 1000 homers. It's just that all the staring players play most of the time.
2) Canned, every baseball game seems that way to me, MVP does it the same.
3) Once again MVP does it just like HH, WSB and ASB. No baseball game had gotten in right. You might say a dive catch out of J. Petyon that only Andruw Jones does but then again WSB, ASB and HH all do the same thing, It's hard to get that nuance of baseball right.
4) Hmm I don't know. Hitting someone is one thing, having good hits is another. I can hit anyone in WSB, ASB and HH but the difference is the score in the end of the game. If you swing at everything you are going to lose.
5) I have to disagree here. Is it perfect no. But don't make me list the number of screwups that I've seen in HH and WSB, 10-20 for each game I think I'm up to. Nagging things yes, game killers no.
I agree that's it's not a full blown sim. But then again what's the point of a video game to have fun or to recreate baseball. After playing so many games over the years, I want sim titles that are fun. Becuase sim titles that are too hung up on themselves just tend to be tedious after a while.
I will say don't by this game looking for a ultra realistic sim. again if you come into it with an open mind...fun can be had.Comment

Re: Guys, Straight up: Is MVP A KEEPER?
This batting interface is entirely overrated (unless I'm missing something here). I push a button to time my swing, YEEEEEHAAAAA! How innovative! (Please note: Sarcasm does not translate well to the text medium) This game is an absolute bore. Hitting the ball is too easy, you never strike out....and the computer never swings at pitches outside the strike zone. This game feels like a retreaded version of Triple Play with some pitch/throw meters and less HRs. Damn you EB for removing your return policy!
Anyone want to buy a copy of MVP for XBOX? I'm selling real cheap
(Alos, BJ Surhoff still on the braves? Rick Hellling on the Diamondbacks, Valentin on the mets? WTF?)It's pretty much my favorite animal. It's like a lion and a tiger mixed... bred for its skills in magic.Comment

Re: Guys, Straight up: Is MVP A KEEPER?
disregard the above post. Anyways, as for the whole sim issue, if you want the best possible sim then buy a text based game. MVP is a nice combo of sim and user skill.Comment
