Re: Phillies reach agreement with A's for Joe Blanton
Beane is a mastermind.. if you want to deal with him, prepare to be handled. He seems to always know how to get value out of his guys and/or when to let go... How he puts up a competitive team after doing this time and time again is pretty amazing itself. He's gone through starting pitching like nothing.. Zito, Hudson, Mulder, Haren, Harden, Blanton...
Countdown for Duchscherer to be dealt? Street as well?I do because I can, I can because I want, I want because you say I can'tComment

Phils got taken to the woodshed here, but hey, at least you still have Carlos Carrasco.Comment

It must suck to be an A's fan.. I know they are "competitive", but how much can you take after seeing Hudson, Zito, Mulder, Izzy, Haren, Harden, and Blanton go? Just seems nuts to meComment

Irrelevant to the topic here...... Phils continue to make questionable moves. Well, scratch that..... they're very predictable since they typically involve the cheapest manner in which to acquire somebody and then they HOPE it will work out.Comment

Plus I think the A's will be better just by getting rid of Joe Blanton let alone robbing the Phillies in exchange for taking him off our hands (have fun with his 3rd time through the lineup)Last edited by throwmonkey; 07-18-2008, 08:27 PM.Comment

Re: Phillies reach agreement with A's for Joe Blanton
Cardenas was never playing here and he's only in what...Single A ball? Meh. If you're 21 and not in Double A yet, you're not that special. A Phillies' #2 player in the minors is like another club's #5 player in the minors.
As long as Blanton is average, he will be WAY better than Adam Eaton. And the whole Citizens Bank Park deal is overrated.Comment

My thoughts exactly. Terrible trade by the Phillies IMO. Blanton is nothing special and they could have found a pitcher just as good in the FA market without giving up 2 good prospects.Comment

And I doubt there is a free agent out there not in his 30s and 40s that has posted 16 wins in a season.Comment

Re: Phillies reach agreement with A's for Joe Blanton
Wins is not a good stat to determine a pitchers overall effectiveness as it has more relevance to the team (ie: a pitcher could get a win by going 6ip and giving up 8 runs while another pitcher could get a loss by going 9ip and giving up 1 run....the second pitcher obviously pitched better). Look a little deeper and you'll see that Blanton hasn't exactly been a very consistent or good starter during his career. Maybe a switch to the weaker NL will help him, but Blanton has also benefited from the A's pitcher-friendly park.
I need to take a look at the current FA list later (heading out now), but I recall 1-2 names that were intriguing. I know both were in their low 30's though.
This just wasn't a good move by the Philly front office. Even most of the other baseball Philly fans agree with that sentiment (Skerik and Z).Last edited by mjb2124; 07-19-2008, 05:46 PM.Comment
