The batting and pitching in this game is great but the fileders have way too much arcade like range...they are all over the place...you dont see enough grounders go thru the hole or fly balls drop into the gaps....and there are hardly any errors or booted balls like in real baseball

plus all the infielders charge everything and throw the runners out by more than 15 feet on ground outs!

they really need to work on creating a more realistic fielding engine next year......player ratings in the field hardly mean anything...everyone has superstar range at getting to the balls

I've seen middle infielders dive for grounders and the ball skips under them, I've seen players dive and just knock the ball down.

The CPU has hit lots of grounders through the gap on me, that's where they get a lot of the hits on me.

I went running after a fly ball and J.D. Drew dove for it--he was barely able to get a glove on it and dropped the ball.

There's plenty of variety in hits and defensive plays.

I dont agree on this...ive seen my SS Ty Wiggington and 1Bmen Mo Vaugn play like Ozzie Smith....they'r all over the ball and always in great position....the range these fielders possess is over exaggerated....I constantly see my SS run into the outfield and make routine plays of catches over his shoulder while facing the outfield wall...do you know how hard it is to catch a ball like that in real life??

They need to tone it down a bit and add more variety in the infield plays....I have never seen a player go in the hole, make a play on a grounder and throw from the knees or even let the ball play him, crouch, set and throw a close play at first.....the infielders seem to charge everything and fire guys out at first by 10-15 feet. I have never seen Roger Cedeno or any other runner leg out a close play or even get thrown out at first on a real close play. This area needs some major tweaking.....its smooth but There still isnt enough variety and error prone plays in the game to make it suspensful at times.

I'm 6 games into my season and have seen a lot of hits that Vina and T. Martinez couldn't reach. Biggio and Kent singled me to death between first and second.

I think the overabundance of over the shoulder cathes by infielders in another byproduct of the lack of fielding animations this year. The fact is, there doesn't seem to be a backwards, running/catching animation for anyone, so that's the only way for a SS to go catch a routine, shallow fly ball to left-center.

If the player were shown backpedaling, and making a textbook, two handed catch, not as many people would be complaining about the infielders cathing so many popups, don't you think?

perhaps you have a point.....but I dont think there is anyone here that plays this game that could honestly tell the difference between Derek Jeter's play at ss versus ....um Ty Wiggiton ( terrible fielder ) they both move with the same grace, agility and finess. And I have not seen differences in terrible defensive teams versus great defensive teams. it's like the engine only uses speed as the sole factor for players in the field. I know they have other ratings but they arent even noticable. Also Plate Patience rating....I really cant tell the difference between someone with high patience or skill at bat or someone who swings at everything....they both seem to require the same strategy to get to swing. ( work their hot cold zones and mix it up ) I cant honestly tell I see an easier difference from players who dont have good patience from those that are very stubborn. They all seem similar.

I totally agree on the relative similarity of the infielders but I do notice a huge difference in both speed and throwing ability in the outfielders.

As far a patience at the plate though, I also notice a huge difference between good and bad hitters. I just got done with a four game series against the Giants (I'm the Cubs), and while I could get a number of hitters to chase a few out of the zone (provided you've set them up well), Bonds just wasn't having it no matter what I tried. Same thing for some other traditionally patient hitters that I've face, like Bagwell, et al.

Roger Cedeno is a terrible outfielder with little range but he has great speed. So I think that MVP does simulate speed differences well...it doesnt handle the differences of range well. Especially like you said in the infield......all fielders play like gold glovers. ALsmost no variety
