How I taught myself to hit more homers

    Yo,

So I've been having trouble hitting the long ball. I play with the Giants, and aside from Bonds, who hits one out just about every third at-bat, I haven't managed to crank one by another player in 50 games played.

After fly-out upon fly-out, I decided to find out if it was even possible for my non-Bonds players to hit HRs. I set-up a two-player exhibition game (Yankees-Giants) and pitched meatballs to myself to work on the timing.

Basically, I would quickly press a pitch button on the pitching controller (not holding it down and not pressing again in the green zone), thus resulting in a mistake pitch. Then, with my batting controller, I'd try and jack it.

This was fun, and I learned a lot about the game:

1.) Power hitters get more "mistake" pitches over the plate. When you throw a mistake, you'll either groove it or throw an obvious ball. To Bonds, nearly every mistake is right over the plate; to Ray Durham, nearly every mistake is a yellow X.

2.) Hold the left-stick up and to the left (for a rightie) or up and to the right (for a leftie) and you'll have much more success. Just pulling straight left or right often isn't enough, and straight up leads to a lot of CF fly-outs.

3.) You've got to swing early. I was consistently swinging too late in my regular games, and even with the stick pulled to the left or right, couldn't ever get enough muscle behind it. Anticipate and swing early and it'll go.

4.) It's pretty difficult (for a non-power hitter) to take a non-mistake out of the park. Bonds, however (and most of the powerhouse Yankee lineup), can jack anything, including yellow-X mistakes.

Most importantly, though, this little exercise let me work on my timing. Kinda like the missing BP game mode. In my first game back in Franchise mode, Ray Durham (leadoff man) was the only guy to get a mistake pitch in a hot zone, and my timing was flawless -- I yanked it into McCovey Cove for my first non-Bonds HR.

Sounds like a lot of people are doing fine on the HR part, but if you're not, I recommend pitching to yourself in exhibition mode. I switched pitches up (not just fastballs) so I could practice jacking changeups and curves, and it was generally a fun nine innings (Yankees won 26-23, but Bonds' 6-6, 6 HR, 7 RBI performance got him the player-of-the-game nod). Plus, Barry took one over the scoreboard at Shea Stadium, which was impressive.

Which skill level are you using? I'm just getting into this game and am finding it difficult to hit any pitches out of the park.

Thanks for the info. It's great when a game makes you want to run tests like this to figure it out. It just shows you how much went into the pitcher/batter interface.

Re: skill level, I hop between All-Star and Pro. I did my test on Pro, I think. If you're having difficulty, do something like I did on Rookie. Timing will come, but, of course, I'm by no means an expert. Heck, I've only hit a handful of non-Bonds HRs, but that's enough to please me.

One other comment, in general, is that you have to wait for your pitch. It's really hard to be patient when you're playing a videogame, but the more overall pitches you see, the more mistakes you'll get, and the better your chances of rocking the ball. That might be part of the CPU's issue in hitting HRs. They swing at 99% of strikes, instead of waiting for the groove-able pitch, and hit very few HRs.

Thanks for the test info. This was a good idea.

I just wish the game would have had batting practice. I would have been nice for working on timing. Instead, I have to do it during the HR challenge w/ the split screen.

                    This is so true.

If you get behind in the count you are dead for the most part.

It took me a few games to get swinging at everything out of my system.

The CPU will throw some balls.

The CPU slider/4 seamer combo kills me. Everytime I anticipate the dip the ball stays flat and I swing at air.

I became more patient at the plate just as a means of survival.

And CPU pitchers absolutely throw more mistake pitches as the count gets higher.

Conversely, if you let the CPU throw only about four to five pitches at most per bat the CPU gets in a groove and is tough to beat.

Patience is the key when batting.

I thought the yellow X was a sign that a pitch was out of the zone. I never swing at those since they are balls like 100% of the time. You've gotten a yellow X in the zone before?

the Yellow "X" is a ball, always.

To me, Hitting HRs seems much easier on mistake pitches, hot or cold. But when I see a curve or change in my hotzone, my eyes light up. If you can hit those pitches, you can crush them alot of the time.
