MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers added two former Yankees pitchers in separate roster moves on Tuesday, acquiring left-handed starter Chase Wright in a trade and right-handed reliever Ramiro Mendoza with a Minor League free agent contract.
Milwaukee sent 23-year-old outfield/catching prospect Eric Fryer to the Yankees for Wright, who turns 26 on Sunday. Wright was a third-round Draft pick in 2001 and made a brief Major League debut in 2007 but spent all of 2008 in the Minors, going 10-3 with a 2.72 ERA for three of New York's affiliates.

Wright was added to the Brewers' 40-man roster, which is now full.

The Brewers selected Fryer in the 10th round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, and he enjoyed a breakthrough season at Class A West Virginia in 2008. A converted outfielder who focused on catching during the second half of the season, Fryer batted .335 in 104 games with a .407 on-base percentage, 10 home runs, 63 RBIs and 15 stolen bases.

He helped the Brewers expand their Minor League pitching depth with Wright, who pitched in three games for the Yankees in 2007, including two starts, and was 2-0 with a 7.20 ERA in that stint. The Brewers are somewhat thin in the starting pitching department at the top levels of the organization, and Wright could get an opportunity to contribute if one of Milwaukee's five scheduled starters suffers an injury and fellow left-hander Chris Capuano has a setback in his recovery from elbow surgery.

Mendoza, 36, inked a Minor League contract with Milwaukee that included an invitation to big league Spring Training camp. He has not appeared in the Majors since he pitched one game for the Yankees in 2005 following shoulder surgery, but he's a veteran of 342 big league games and owns a 4.30 ERA. He is on Panama's preliminary roster for the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

The Twins made a move toward shoring up their bullpen Friday (February 6, 2009), signing right-hander Luis Ayala to a one-year, $1.3 million contract, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
The newspaper spoke to Ayala's agent, Joe Longo, who confirmed the signing, which includes up to $575,000 in performance incentives. "He's happy to go in there and fight for that setup job," Longo told the paper.

Ayala, 31, made 86 appearances in 2008 for the Washington Nationals and New York Mets and went 2-10 with a 5.71 ERA and nine saves. He was 2-2 with a 3.19 ERA for Washington in 2007. The signing is complete pending a physical
