Without getting into too many stats, I'll simply say the horrendous Nats defense and some bad luck has hurt Hanrahan this year. Plus, his confidence was shaken by the early-season woes. His ERA is out of whack for those reasons, and it's probably closer to 4 than 8 in reality.

This is like the pinnacle of a sell high-buy low trade though, and it's the type of trade a desperate team (see: Nationals) foolishly makes. I think the only thing better about the deal was that Rizzo said Burnett and Morgan were "building blocks."

      Yikes.

i'll settle this discussion. It's basically two nobody's for two other nobody's, no team wins or loses.

Hanrahan's WHIP is almost 2, that's not bad luck and poor defense, that's just flat out sucking.

While I do get your point, I fail to see how the Nats dumping a horrible pitcher and a guy they weren't even playing is bad in any way.

I think it's a philosophy thing more than even the trade itself. The Nats are bad, and maybe they get a few games better in the short term (but probably not) and get rid of two players at their lowest value. It's just not a good habit to get into. The Nats aren't on the verge of competing after all.

This trade makes no sense to me. Unless they are going to trade Holiday? Which I am sure they are, but who will take a rental player?
