I'm loving this game so far. I have read that some of you have problems hitting homeruns using manage only mode. I hit one, and the computer hit two against me. No problem so far. Comments?

Manage only - power vs contact
I just got ASB and played a manage only game using the Rangers vs the Texans. I hit a HR using contact swing with Palmero. Do you guys usually use contact swing, and when do you use the power swing? How do you hit a sacrifice fly? What are your strategies for getting strikeouts using manage only mode with generated counts?

Re: Manage only - power vs contact
I'm playing exclusively manage-only and am really loving it.
As far as contact vs power is concerned, I generally allow both the situation and the type of hitter at the plate todetermine what I decide. For instance, if a player not generally known as a power hitter is at the plate I will rarely use the power option for him. Perhaps the only exception to this is late in a game when I need a "big hit" and the count is favorable.
The count will dictate when I use the power option as well. I use generated count (I know this opens a new can of worms for debate) and if I notice that my power hitter is down in the count to begin with, I' opt for contact only for him. I generally believe that the power option raises the risk of striking out.
I, like you, have hit an occasional HR with contact. I think that this is a very realistic occurance. Many times in the majors, a player just gets great wood on the ball without necessarily trying to hit it out of the park.
I don't have too many problems with sacrifices, with the only exception of the generated pitch count. I find that the biggest drawback to the GPC is when you are in a definite bunting situation and all of a sudden you have two strikes on you.
As for Cas flies, I find that I can generate them by using contact or power. I'll be anxious to hear from other posters regarding their thoughts on this.
Anyway...hope this helps.
If you continue to play Manage-Only, keep posting. I'll be anxious to see how things turns out. BTW...which team will you use? An expansion team...the Texans?Congratulations BUTLER BULL DOGS!

Re: Manage only - power vs contact
I am beginning to wonder if the ballpark has a factor in the ammount of home-runs hit. I've been to Enron- err.. Minute Maid twice and seen about 10 bombs playing as manage-only... and this includes Julio Lugo, Roy Oswalt, Tony Clark.. going yard. However, I play with my expansion Green Sox at Fischback field and in about 30 managed games I've witnessed maybe a home-run every other game. The ball just seems heavier there. And I've yet to see a home-run go to center-field in any park.
Seriously, what park do you all play at and what kind of power results do you see for manage-only games? I love this game but these flashbacks to the dead-ball era make me want to go ride my bike. Hey, maybe that's a good thing.
Oh, and as for sac flies I usually get them. I think the smart players seem to make adjustments and hit the ball in the air, using power or contact.Comment

Re: Manage only - power vs contact
I was not getting a whole lot of homers in Spring Training. I played in the Grapefruit Stadium and I can't recall its dimensions. I'm now playing at the new GABP and while I'm not hitting a tremendous amount of homers, I've hit afew. I rank in the middle of all NL teams through the early parts of the season. But that's the Reds for you. While not an expansive stadium GABP does require a whollup to knock it out with the exception of right field. My lefties are experiencing higher numbers as a result.Congratulations BUTLER BULL DOGS!

Re: Manage only - power vs contact
I'm definitely going to continue playing Manage Only mode with generated pitch counts. Why did you say that generated pitch counts opens up a can of worms?
I played as the Braves vs the Giants. It was a pitcher's duel this time around. Maddux pitched 8 innings for me, only giving up 5 hits, 1 run, 10 K's, but 8 balls. Starting pitcher for Giants pitched a shutout on me, so they won the game. I can definitely see what you guys are talking about concerning low-scoring games using manage only mode. However, my earlier Indians vs Rangers game has me believing that a good hitting team against average or poor pitchers can put up a lot of runs and HR's too.
I am glad that you guys have noticed that the AI is smart enough to perform a sacrifice fly when the situation is appropriate. I was worried about that, since there isn't a sac fly option in manage only mode.
How about your stealing percentages? So far I've been caught stealing more often that I'd like, but maybe it's because I'm not using fast enough guys to attempt steals, or I'm not doing it on the right pitch counts. Any suggestions?
Does anyone use the take pitch button? My guys strike out a lot, and I wonder if that would help to reduce the number of K's, although they do a good job at taking pitches when I select contact swing.
One last question, how do you get the game to save your options for manage only mode? Every time I start an exhibition game, I have to change the difficulty from veteran to manage only mode before I start. Then after I get in the game, I have to change some more options, but it doesn't save them for me. I've gone to the game options section before I start the game, but it doesn't give me all the options to change as when I'm in the game.
Let's keep the manage only mode discussion going guys. I'm sure that they are several of us here that playing this game in this mode (especially HH defectors, lol), since ASB is the only game that has manage only this year.Comment

Actually, there isn't all that much truth to that. When I first began posting the fact that I like the MO mode so much that I may play exclusively on that, I feared a lot of people would lash out and and question my manhood.....lol.
But really everyone in the ASB forum respect one another's favorite ways to enjoy the game.
And that's why ASB folks are the best folks around!Congratulations BUTLER BULL DOGS!

I'm glad to be in this forum too. I bought MVP baseball on its release date because the pitching meter and sim intervention were innovative. It was a fun game, but the pitcher fatigue killed it for me. I traded it in for ASB because I remember how much I used to love manage only mode in Sammy Sosa HH baseball. I'm very happy with my trade, and I am proud to be a member of the ASB crowd, even though a lot of people hate this game.Comment

Re: Manage only - power vs contact
I just finished a game with me using the Giants vs the Cubs. Bonds hit a high and deep homer into the bay, and I only used contact swing. I won 5-0. Schmidt was the player of the game, since he pitched a 2-hit shutout with 7 K and 5 BB. As you can tell, I'm loving this game. I should have bought ASB on its release date!Comment
