Re: Cubs acquire Gregg
Is this a stop-gap measure if Wood doesn't resign? Is he going to be the set-up man to Wood? Or is this move signifying the Cubs desire to part ways w/ Wood?
This one is interesting. So who becomes the closer in Florida now? Tankersly?Originally posted by Edmund BurkeAll that is needed for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing. -

Re: Cubs acquire Gregg
Jose Ceda is the Cubs best reliever in their farm system. He throws 95+ with good breaking stuff. He started in Class A last year and almost made the squad in spring training.
I'd say the Marlins know what they are doing.Comment

Re: Cubs acquire Gregg
Ceda is a quality prospect. I think the Cubs got the better end of the deal. But the Marlins didn't get ripped off by any means. Supposedly Ceda was the closer of the future in Chicago."The academic support at Ohio State, there is no way you can fail. Even if you're giving minimal effort there is no way you can fail."

Re: Cubs acquire Gregg
At the start of the offseason the Marlins had 15 players eligable for salary arbitration, most, if not all are expected to get hefty raises. In the past two weeks they have dealt 4 of those players and may move at least 1 more (Hermida or Uggla) before the offseason ends.
The bottom line is the Marlins don't want to spend money. Jeffery Loria once again received $30 million dollars in revenue sharing and plans on using it to cover his stadium costs rather than put it towards player salaries as it is supposed to be used for.Comment

I like it for the Marlins, Ceda is a very good prospect. I don't know too much about Gregg but IIRC he was pretty shaky as a closer.Comment

Re: Cubs acquire Gregg
I am going to miss the K-Man. Through good times and bad, he was a class act grade A person.
I see why the Cubs did this though. He wanted a multi year deal, they only wanted to give him 1. I don't like paying closers lots of money. Marms is ready, and Gregg is insurance. They better use the money elsewhere now to improve other areas. The pen will be a question mark next year no doubt.
K-Man will now get paid which is good for him.Comment

Re: Cubs acquire Gregg
For the sake of Cub fans I hope they plan on using Gregg as a set up guy. As a Marlins fan I would have been happy to get a bag of baseballs in return for Gregg. His 9 blown saves cost the Marlins any chance they had at making a run last year. Sounds like the fish got a decent prospect out of the deal.Good job! Good effort!Comment
