The Truth About HH And Other Games - 3DO Check This Out

I;m ready to tell my story. I'm a baseball fan. Grew up playing SOM, played some high school BB, discovered Earl Weaver, then stopped gaming after I graduated from college. When the PS One came out, my girlfriend had it and I decised to take a look at Triple Play. Absolutely hated it. I used to think if only a videogame could represent all of the nuances of the sport of baseball, I'd be happy. Homer fests and arcade games were for kids, not a true baseball fan.

After years of not touching a baseball videogame, I decided to take a look at what's changed. I heard about HH. The gameplay got me interested. I saw the movies on this website along with WSB and MVP. I got turned off. HH's graphics were awful in the movies. I bought MVP and WSB. I played MVP only to be disappointed. The computer AI yanked pitchers too quickly and the gameplay reminded me of a toned down version of Triple Play. Not a real sim. Not true baseball. I exchanged it for HH. Initially, HH disappointed me. I thought the graphics were a throwback to PS One days. How could the technology remain the same after I had left the gaming world for so many years? I regretted exchanging MVP, but since I couldn't do anything else with it, I decided to learn about HH and get into the game more.

I read Cookie's review. It sounded interesting, so I played more and more. I HAVE NOW SEEN THE LIGHT. HH's gameplay is AMAZING. Catchers drop called third strikes. Balks occur. Catchers pick off runners. Pitchers have off days when their "stuff" just isn't there. Players argue with umpires. Different umpires call games differently. This is true baseball. This is the essence of the sport.

Often its been said by some gamers that its a videogame. Fun is what matters. True. But, to me, baseball, or any sport for that matter, just can't be fun if it's not real. If the skills of the user is all that matters, than you might as well go back to playing Atari baseball and match your skills against another user. No need for player ratings. If you are going to have player ratings, the game needs to play like the real thing. EA Sports always misses the point. Their games are entertaining, but not "fun" if you are a true fan of baseball. How can it be fun if you can't have catchers drop third strikes, pitchers warm up, pitchers having control problems on any given day, etc. Only HH is able to all of these things. I still admit the graphics need improvement. As I said, I didn't like it in the beginning. But it is the true baseball fan's game. Pitching in this game is as real as it gets. If you give the game a chance, if you love baseball, then it WILL win you over. I now love the game. It is the BEST at gameplay. I still think WSB is the best overall package. But, if HH had better graphics, there would be no comparison. Hopefully, next year the graphics will be improved. Take it from me. If you look deep into the game, there is nothing like it. It is baseball. Thank God for 3DO. No other company gets it right for the true baseball fan!!!!!

I'm just about convinced now about trading in ASB for HH. I just finished trading in MVP for ASB because I'm searching for that baseball sim just like you.

The dude speaks the truth. I've tried MVP, WSB and HH wins out everytime. It just feels like real Baseball. It may not be the prettiest game but you get past that real quick after you play a couple of games.

I have the XBOX version and it doesn't look to bad. Some say the XBOX version has some graphic improvements and bug fixes that are in the PS2 version.

I'm going to EB as soon as I get a chance to exchange ASB for HH. The EB guys are going to laugh at me for trading in so many baseball games.

Yes High Heat is unbelievable. I have been playing nonstop. I have the XBOX version and am playing it in 480p, it looks pretty good, but the gameplay is so addictive. There's nothing like your star player coming out of a slump and you can tell he's going to be ripping the cover off of the ball for the next few games. This game represents hot and cold streaks better than any other sports games I've played.

I started with WSB. Thought it was a good game, but wanted to see what all of the talk was about this "hitting/pitching interface" that was so revolutionary in MVP. I thought it was pretty good, and the graphics were great. Every batting stance was representitive of the real-life counterpart. There were a couple of very minor problems with the ballparks, but they were very good too. I just got tired of fielding- the computer did almost everything for you. And then all of the stupid things it did for subs and baserunning etc. It got old real fast.

I was ready to go back to Gamestop and trade it for WSB until I saw all of the posts in the ASB forum. So I had to give it a try. The graphics were awesome- every face looked real. The stadiums were perfect. Then, there is the gameplay. Terrible. I could swing early on a pitch and see the ball go the opposite way. I could swing over a pitch with the cursor and see the ball go sky high. It was absolutely terrible.

Again, I almost went back to WSB. I saw the forum here and saw very little posting about HH. I figured it must not be too popular which I took to mean that it wasn't good. I read a few posts about gameplay and decided to give it a chance. Wow. Gameplay is perfect. Graphics are not good (compared to the other 3), but once you get past that, the game is great.

Yes High Heat offers great gameplay, however, I think 3DO has really gotten themselves in some competition problems. Once being the ultimate king of baseball )not sales, but gameplay wise) it seems that all the others are catching up or are pretty close.

Gamers are an impatient lot and I have read about all the people who have moved away from HH because of their lack of keeping up in other areas, i.e., graphics (yes they did much better with the animations, but they look sort of cartoony next to the other games), menus, sound (the XBOX cuts out badly) and the same announcers. Now the announcing is good, but it hasn't changed and that's what I think a lot of gamers wanted to see. The repetitive things drove me away from the game, gameplay aside.

It will be interesting to see the comparative sales figures. I will bet HH is at the bottom (lots of expressed anger over the PC game this year hasn't helped their PR). If so this spells problems for 3DO, in my opinion. If they don't invest some more talent into other areas of the game they will certainly suffer for it next year.

This, in my opinion, was supposed to be the year for 3DO to blow all the other games out of the water. They didn't and now we are hearing that they are taking the right steps for next year. I don't know, that remains to be seen.
