Re: Whitesox shipping Dye to Reds for Bailey?
Bailey sucked last year, BUT Gavin Floyd sucked in his final year (2007) in Philly before they traded him and Gio Gonzalez (who Chicago parlayed into Nick Swisher) for a broken down Freddy Garcia.
Gavin Floyd then throws a no-no for the White Sox in 2008, and wins 17 games for the White Sox.
I'd bet on this deal going the exact same way for Chicago, or at least that's what they're hoping...Comment

Re: Whitesox shipping Dye to Reds for Bailey?
The bottom line is the Reds are going to have to spend money on an Outfielder somewhere, whether it's Jermaine Dye or not.
The Reds have two holes in their OF: one in LF and one in either CF or RF depending on who they get and where Jay Bruce plays. Dye allows Bruce to move back to CF. Yes the Reds could look for a cheaper option like say Juan Rivera, but Rivera has already been linked in rumors with the Phillies and the Braves-both clubs with better chances of competing than the Reds. Acquiring Dye also means they only have to start one of the Dickerson/Freel/Hopper three headed monster instead of two if they did nothing and just spent the money on pitching.
Of course they could say forget it and not get a decent bat and just bring Corey Patterson back for another year. I'm sure Reds fans would love that.Comment

Re: Whitesox shipping Dye to Reds for Bailey?
You have to figure that the White Sox will eat part of his salary and even if Dye is past his prime coming to a great hitters park like Great American Ballpark is probably won't hurt his numbers.
I get what you are saying about overpaying for players. The Red Sox do it all of the time, partly because they can and partly because everyone else knows that they can. They have had some pretty bad contracts pass thru Fenway the last few years (Matt Clement, Edgar Renteria, Julio Lugo). The Reds are on the flip side of that coin. They have to overpay to get decent players to come to them because they have not been very good for a while now. They grossly over paid for Bronson Arroyo and Francisco Cordero, but they wouldn't have either one if they didn't.
We don't know if Homer Bailey will ever develope into anything other than a mediocre bottom of the rotation starter so if that is the price to pay to get a hitter than so be it. Look at it this way, the money aside, it would be better to take the risk on Dye for one season and hope he works out rather than sign a player for 3 or 4 years and have him fizzle and be stuck with a bad contract for a few years.Comment

Re: Whitesox shipping Dye to Reds for Bailey?
I'm going to guess the reds would consider Dunn if they don't make a trade for Dye or someone. He doesn't cost a draft pick, he'll drive in runs, he hits HR's, he gets on base a lot. But, is bad in the field, K's lots, and I'm pretty sure most of the fans wouldn't want him back. I wouldn't mind it if they got him on a short term deal.Comment

Hmm...I must have missed that when it happened. Or more likely I just forgot about it, I'm sure I read it in the paper or somewhere online. Well, there goes that idea.Comment

Re: Whitesox shipping Dye to Reds for Bailey?
Peter Gammons was on ESPNews a little while ago saying that there is no deal in the works between the Sox/Reds for Dye, citing it as nothing more than a rumor. He also mentioned Ozzie Guillen talking with Dye and informing him that there was nothing to the rumor. Take it for what it's worth.
Gammons also mentioned that the Red are trying to acquire Orioles Catcher Ramon Hernandez for Ryan Freel. Considering that Paul Bako got the bulk of the playing time behind the plate last season Hernandez is a definite upgrade.Comment

Re: Whitesox shipping Dye to Reds for Bailey?
Even though this deal likely isn't going to happen, I'm a firm believer that no matter how talented Homer is, he won't take the next step while in the Reds organization. He's had a bad attitude for the last couple of seasons and doesn't seem willing to let his coaches help him. As much as I understand that young pitching is important to have, if you can trade him, do it. I'd either wait until he gets off to a hot start in the minors and try to maximize his value and/or find a younger player than Dye who bats RH with power.
