The Red Sox added more bullpen depth today, signing former Dodgers closer Takashi Saito to a one-year contract.

Another one of those low risk, potential signings if he can recover from his injuries.

I was hoping the Mets might take a chance on this guy.

They already have 2 top of the line closers. No need for 3

I don't think he's closing for the Sox!

Yeah but you guys got Putz and K-Rod. To add Saito would be a sure win if the starter went to the 6th. The sox really only have Jenks. I like to see even teams

No, he will be late mid relief. Just another option of depth with Ramon Ramirez and Delcarmen.

And if Okajima is overworked in a series he can be set-up. Paps is still the closer.

                It is all about depth.

I changed the title to reflect the fact it's the Red Sox.

And yeah, the Sox won't use him as a closer - he'll help fill the 6th and 7th innings with Delcarmen, Ramirez, Masterson (if he's in the pen) .

You always need depth with pitching.

                        Always.

                          Indeed.

Masterson, Saito, Okajima, Ramirez, Delcarmen, Papelbon all in the pen is a very solid and deep bullpen to have.

I don't see much coming from this, but it's still a worthwhile risk for a big market team like Boston. I just don't think Saito will be healthy enough to be effective. The only thing going for him is that most teams in the AL have never faced him so if his stuff comes back even at 80% he has a shot to make a positive impact.

Good signing IMO. As long as he isn't closing games, which he won't be, he should be a great bullpen arm for the Sox.

I've liked all the moves the Sox have made this year.

They've gone in the opposite direction of the Yankees, but other than Tex, I think they match up pretty well in terms of adding starting pitching/arms.
