I think the trade was made because the game over-values Eli Marrero. Last season his hitting blossomed once he moved to the outfield (I know some scouting reports that theorized his hitting was bolstered by the lowering of defensive responsibility) but the game reads him as being a top ten Catcher I would suspect-- much the same way it regards Scott Hatteberg, though he doesn't catch anymore either. The game doesn't take into account that Marrero's good hitting is very much dependant on his NOT catching all the time. Hence, a trade of a very good catcher and an average but serviceable 1st baseman for a great 1st baseman makes more sense. I might sumise the trade happens even without Fassero thrown in.
However in real life... not a friggen chance. Maybe if the Cards replaced Fassero with JD Drew I could see it. The point is, teams don't trade in there best players for older players. They rebuild with youth.
