Shorter seasons back in the day?

I'm not very familiar with the way baseball used to be played back in the early days. But I have heard that seasons used to be shorter? Is this true?

I know there used to be 150something games, and they were probably less then that way back when MLB just started.

Yup, they used to be shorter. They extended them from I think 150 to 162. Thats where the whole 61* thing came in.

Just to be specific MLB used to have it like this AL and NL 154 game sched. Winner of the AL met the NL winner. In '61 they started the 162 game schedule. In 1969 things got split into divisions NL East, NL West, AL East, AL West.

Winner of the divisions met in the LCS. It was a 5 game series til 1985 when it became a 7 game series.

Of course you know the alignment now.

The four man rotations and the fact that the bullpen was barely used accounts for this. I'm currently reading through the Bill James Baseball Abstract and its amazing to here how back in the early days some teams only had like two or three pitchers and it was nothing for a guy to throw 500 innings in a season. Its a great book if your interested in the history and beginnings of baseball.

Back then no pitch counts, the extended pitchers, had a small rotation and I'm not sure about Bullpen though. If they had one.
