I think he pocketed the rest of his salary from the Pirates, hopped into his yacht, and sailed off into the sunset, never to be heard from again.

Yeah, that guy turned into the worst player in the majors when he got older. I couldn't believe they were paying him all that money.

He was absolutly terrible, I think he batted .180 for a year. The one thing I rember was he that he was completely bald except for this moustache that made his look like an evil cartoon villain.

                        Oy...Pat Meares.

Okay. The guy signs a long-term deal with the Bucs and promptly screws up his hand. After several surgeries, his hand is still nowhere near where it used to be. In fact, he can't even use the bottom fingers on it to hold the bat. Needless to say, this makes him a rather crappy batter. The Pirates and Meares reached an insurance settlement to pay for some of his contract since he is physically unable to play. I don't know all the details, but that's it in a nutshell.

Derek Bell was always a jerk. It doesn't surprise me with what happened to him in Pitsburgh. When he was a young guy in Toronto in 1992 after the AL championship win he went and trashed up Dave Stieb's locker. At that time Stieb couldn't pitch and was quite bummed about the whole situation because he was the workhouse of the Jays throughout the 80s. It was pretty classless to trash up the locker of the franchise's greatest pitcher.
