    Re: Operation Shut Down

Albert Belle is under contract until the end of this season,
this is one of the things wrong with baseball,
a player suffers from a career ending condition (degenrative hip) has the option to a)retire and forefit the rest of the contract or b)stay on the 40 man roster and bleed the team for 3 years, Belle and Scott Erickson are two of the worst big money signings in baseball history, although Derek Bell is right there with them.

yes i agree- it is very wrong to still remain "part of the team", not play, & STILL collect a salary.. hmmmm.. i should try this w/ my job (only kidding).. i think the worst signing in baseball was when the mets signed bobby "Can't wipe the smile off my face" bonilla back in 92-93.. uugghh..

            Re: Operation Shut Down

            heres another one,
Wilson Alvarez, Alvarez has had more operations on his pitching arm then he could count on both hands, missed all of the 2000-01 seasons comes back in spring training with the Devil Rays last year has no velocity at all, a reporter asks him
"why take the chance of doing permanent damage to your arm?"Alvarez under contract to make something like 8mil last season responded with "i wanted to retire but my wife would'nt let me forefit the money",
what was tampa thinking when they signed him to a 5 year 34 million dollar contract,
hey wilson next time you get married you might want to start "Operation pre nup"

I'm surprised they haven't done the same thing with Belle that the Pirates did with Pat Meares. I don't know the details, but they were able to get some of the money back in an insurance settlement since Meares has been declared "physically unable to play"
