I love it, yes he is 40 and he may not be the guy who hits 50 HR anymore, but his sure is a nice right hand power hitting insurance bat, With Detroit paying him almost all his salary this year, I think we are only going to be paying him about $800,000.

    I like the signing.

Never quite was a guy who hit 50 HRs in a season.

        A 40-year-old .225 hitter who can't field.

        Damn, there goes the division.

I question the use of three exclamation points in this topic's title.

Um, where does Sheffield play? Not familar with the outfield situation with the Mets.

I see it as a plus. Can't go wrong with a veteran to help your playoff runs.

How was I trolling? You were ecstatic about Ibanez and completely ignored his flaws in the field and now that Philadelphia's main rival signs a subpar fielder you're pointing that out. Seems kind of hypocritical to me.

Anyway, if it was a small contract, I don't see how it's a bad signing. He probably won't be playing every day.

It seems hypocritical that I'm willing to overlook a guy's fielding who hits .290 and drives in 100 runs, but I'm harping on the fielding of a .225 hitter whose stats took a dive across the board last season? Ibanez brings other things to the table, including a great attitude. Sheffield, not so much.

Sheffield is a poor clubhouse guy, who hits .225, and who can't field. Oh, and he hates Latin players. Yet he signed with....the Mets. Yeah, this will work out great.

Sheff's gonna respect Manuel, whos a respected black manager.

Fans who say he's gonna disrupt the clubhouse are clueless. All great teams have crazy guys who rock the boat. Look at the 86 Mets. Its a joke everyone expects their players to be choir boys.

Like Omar said today, its low risk, high reward. Sheff's a gamer, something the Mets really lacked the last two seasons.

                            Excellent signing.

I can't believe Carew hasn't said anything in this thread yet...Anyways, I don't like Sheff as a player now but it's very low risk for the Mets from an outside perspective in that he can be released if his play is still horrible as it has been the past couple of years. However, the Mets have clubhouse issues already so Sheff won't be alleviating that problem.

It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.
