    How do you hit?

I was hoping one of the ASB guys can help explain hitting in this game. I have ASB 2003 (Last years game) for the XBOX. I enjoy parts of the game and especially dig the stadium graphics and details, but like many, I find hitting to be very frustrating.

I find that I have to swing as the pitcher is releasing the ball…..especially fastballs. If the pitcher decides to throw out of the strike zone, I am pretty much toast. If I play to 100% guess all pitches and locations, I get realistic results on the veteran level. While I like the realism, the guess-a-thon is not too fun.

For those who really enjoy the game, how do you hit? Do you guess? Are you quick enough to see and react to pitches? Do you move the cursor to hit the ball as you are swinging? What am I missing here?

I have been playing video games for a long time, but this one sure makes me feel old and slow.

    Thanks for any insight.

Use easy if you want it to be unrealistic.

Other than that, do batting practice. That will help, you'll feel more comfortable hitting.

Exactly. I tried the Easy Hitting and it was too easy and unrealistic.

I like a challenge. But if I strike out, I want it to be because I got too anxious and chased something out of the strike zone. Or because I thought a ball was going inside that suddenly cut into the stike zone. In ASB, by the time I see the ball I am already too late, so I have to swing as it is being pitched. I strike out if the pitcher decides to throw a ball. So for me, skill does not decide success, it is guessing and luck that decide things.

Use the Cursor on Veteran. I find that you get a big enough cursor to hit the ball and that the pitches are slow enough to be hittable, fast enough to be challenging. I think we can all admit that it takes time to get a hang of cursor hitting, especially if you are used to zone hitting. I think the challenge is well worth it. Some people say exageratted pitching helps, but I found that to be a little two unrealistic and distracting. The thing I love about cursor hitting is that like real hitting you can hit a pitch out of the strike zone for a HR or a big hit, but if you swing at a bad pitch and miss, you miss ugly sometimes. Hope that rambling was helpful.

What I did was I started out on veteran with exaggerated pitching and the classic cursor. When I got good at picking up the pitches, I went back to normal pitching.

If you're having trouble with veteran/exaggerated pitching, put some time in batting practice. It really does make a difference.

I use classic cursor on veteran. Even after playing last years game it took me a while to get used to. My batting averages are very low right now because in the first 20-30 games i was whiffing a lot and averaging maybe 6-7 hits per game. However at game 96 of my season, im raising my batting averages greatly and now get about 8-15 hits per game (but not to say i still don't get shut down). I've raised Furcal's batting average from a lowly .205 up to .280 now, so i'm happy.

It's still tough to react to 95+ mph fastballs, but I can usually get the cursor to the location. Sliders still give me a bit of trouble because of the late break. I've gotten good at hitting changeups, you kinda just have to know when they are coming. Guys like Wood, Schilling, and Johnson are tough to hit but I can still beat them sometimes. Just takes 3-4 innings to get used to the blazing fastballs (and for them to tire a bit and velocity starts to slip to low 90s).

if you think the pitch guessing is not fun maybe this is not the game for you, i think that feature is the #1 thing that makes this game so realistic.

Trust me, you'll get better. Pretty soon you'll start seeing low sliders and such and hitting where they WILL be. It's all a matter of mathematics, and sooner or later your brain catches on, lol.
