    How to start with Baseball?

    Hey guys.
I'm from Germany and there is NO American Sports Hype, except a 10 seconds report on Dirk Nowitzki and the result of the Mavs game.
I'm a NBA, NHL and NFL Fan, play all 3 Videogames and wanted to start becoming a MLB Fan, but i don't know how.
I played the MLB The Show 09 Demo on PS3 but there's no big motivation without knowing all the teams and the big names of the players and just knowing the basic rules.
So my question is: What is the best way to start watching MLB?
And how should I find a team?
    How should i start?
    Any tips or sugestions?
    Thank you in advance.

I started by getting amused by the physics involved. I loved how pitchers could make the ball curve in the air and deceive the hitter. I also liked home runs.

I started watching and became enthralled with the pitcher trying to confuse the batter. After that, I became a major fan of my hometown team, the Chicago Cubs. But I still enjoyed watching baseball in general.

All I can say is find a reason to enjoy the game and then pick up a team who has cool uniforms.

I'm not sure how to find a team if you're outside of the country. Normally someone finds a team based on who their parents followed or based on geographic location. I'd suggest finding a player you like and going from there. I don't know of any German baseball players, which I guess would be logical place to start for you, so I'll just list some of the names in the game today:

Albert Pujols - he's from the Dominican Republic and plays first base for the St. Louis Cardinals. He is arguably the best right-handed hitter and best player in the game today. Off the field, he's a big part of the community and is known for his charity work with children.

Johan Santana - Arguably the best pitcher, certainly the best left-handed pitcher today. He is from Venezuela and is a starting pitcher for the New York Mets. He has a good fastball but is mostly known for his change-up which he releases just like his fastball, but comes at the hitter a good 10 miles an hour slower than his fastball.

Ryan Howard - an African American born first baseman for the reigning world champion Philadelphia Phillies. He's the best homerun hitter in the game today.

I'd suggest typing some names into google or Wikipedia for more. Some sugestions (young and old): Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, Roy Halladay, Tim Lincecum, Randy Johnson, Manny Ramirez, Ichiro Suzuki, Evan Longoria, Vladimir Guerrero, Hanley Ramirez, Carlos Zambrano.

Good ideas folks, i posted this in another Baseball Forum aswell, they said, i should choose one of the 4 big clubs with red sox, yankees, cubs or dodgers.

I like what dalnet22 said, i already watched some vids of these crazy Pitches from Japan.

Otherwise, good idea from misfit, i googled and i found 2 german players who are still active.
First is Jeff Baker from the Rockies.
Second is Edwin Jackson from the Tigers.

I must say, i know some players from a few teams.
I know many Red Sox and Rockies Players, because of the "The Show 08" Demo and Evan Longoria and Ryan Howard from the 09 Demo.
one year ago i was in Thailand and on tv i was able to watch ESPN Asia and that was at the time, the Red Sox were in Japan for the Season Opener. I watched the first 3 Innings.

I guess i'll choose the Rockies first, because i know some of their players and their german looks more german than edwin jackson of the tigers, who is black.
Let's see if I'm able to watch a stream of a MLB Game today, oh there is no Rockies Game today.
Other Problem is, i think it is good to have the Videogame, because i can say that i don't know if i still were a nhl or nfl fan without the videogame.
But there is the problem: As far as i know, neither MLB 2K nor The Show have been released in europe.

No doubt. I was stationed in Germany for over 10 years and I've met many black Germans. I hope that was just a really bad joke as well.

I'm not a moderator but lets drop the racist accusations immediately before a new member gets turned off from OS and baseball and a constructive topic is closed. Statements presented in text can take on different meanings, especially if the poster is not using his native language. This poster is German and likely white and identifies with white Germans and is looking for a player he identifies with in MLB. Throwing the racist label at someone is reckless and stupid on a messageboard.

I apologize if that sounds like me being a racist.

                  But now let's bury that.

I'd imagine there's lots of quality baseball related clips on YouTube, and some of the historical documentaries produced by HBO and ESPN have been really well made...

Re: How to start with Baseball?

If you like an underdog, I suggest you root for the Florida Marlins. They have 1/10 of the Yankees' payroll (and their entire roster makes less than Alex Rodriguez alone), and yet they are tied for the best record in baseball right now. They're a fun team to watch with a good combination of power and speed on offense and incredible starting pitching.

But in any case, once you've decided on a team, just start following them whatever way you can and try to pick up the nuances of the game that way. It's a very detailed, complex sport, so it's going to take you a while, but trust me, in the end, it's worth it.

You could start here. Also, when I was in Germany, sometimes the different companies played some baseball on and off base. Maybe you can watch some soldiers play the game.

I'd probably pick a team based on what city you like, that's how I picked what soccer team I followed.
