Eric Wedge will be first manager fired

    Discuss

Personally I think it might be time. I saw a majority of the game last night and some of it today. The Indians have no pitching (not his fault really) but the old complaint about lack of defense since Wedge has been there has really cropped up again. Last night was some of the worst fielding i've seen in a big league game for some time.

It will either be Wedge or Clint Hurdle, but i give the edge to Wedge. Hurdle manages a team where the expectations are not as high even though the Rockies played in the World Series a couple of years ago. Wedge is definitely on the bubble and if the Indians keep playing as poorly as they have he may not make it out of april as the manager.

I used to be a Manny Acta fan, but lately I'm becoming less and less confident about his abilities.

He's the Nats' version of Glen Hanlon.

I think the same message over and over again has finally stopped getting through to the players.

They look unmotivated, undisciplined, and unprepared. Unfortunately, there is little to no way that Shapiro will fire Wedge.

Shapiro has this undying love of Eric Wedge and will not consider firing him at all.

Let's put it this way, if Wedge goes, I firmly believe Shapiro will leave as well.

Shapiro is no fool. If it looks like his job would be on the line if he sticks up for Wedge then he'll fire Wedge. Loyalty only goes so far in pro sports.

The Nationals coach will be fired first as he's started the yr off 0-6, but the Indians are close so maybe it can go either way.

The leash on Wedge is a lot shorter than the leash on Acta. The only real expectations in Washington was to try and not lose 100 games again this year. Acta is probably safe until the Nationals officially name a new GM.

No way. Acta is an absolute genius. Firing him would be horrible.

What reasons do you have for that?

Naming Milledge the leadoff hitter a week into ST, when Guzman was great at it?
                        Leaving Zimmerman in the 3-hole?
His complete mis-management of the bullpen?
His nothing but sunshine and puppies mentality?
                        His double-standard with certain players?

I'd love to hear why Acta is some genius. He hasn't had a lot of pitching to work with but he sure is terrible at certain aspects. Like I said, I used to like him but his flaws are becoming more evident.

SB: How would you feel about an international draft?
MA: I’m not a fan of it. People talk about it limiting costs by stopping bidding wars for the top guys. But that’s just the top guys. For everybody else, it could actually make things more expensive. There are so many kids down there that are dying to come up and be big leaguers. The system as it is is good for both sides. If you institute a draft, less kids get signed. That’s bad for the kids obviously, and bad for the teams since the more players you sign the better chances you have of striking gold.

SB: What’s your stance on bunting and other one run strategies?
MA: Bunting is pretty outdated. Everybody scores so many runs nowadays, it doesn’t make sense to play for one run unless it’s late in the game and it’s close. I hardly ever bunt early in a game, unless it’s with a pitcher. A big inning can win you a game. One run in the third inning can’t, unless you have Pedro pitching.

He's clearly got a better grasp on the game than most managers in the big leagues. I'm glad he has an upbeat attitude. The last thing a bad team needs is the guy in charge talking about the world is ending. The Nats aren't going to be good for awhile and when the talent is up, I can't think of an available guy I'd rather have in charge than Acta.

Ewing, who is SB? Not to discredit, but I'd like to see a source of your info...I agree about the international draft but not necessarily about his views on bunting.

I don't care about Manny's thoughts on a potential amateur draft. Who cares? He's not the GM. That's irrelevant.

Bunting is not always a statistically sound play but he's at least recognized that bunting with 2 men on and no outs is a good play. Unfortunately the team sucks so much at clutch hitting it doesn't even matter.

But hey, Manny will just trot out Milledge in center and Kearns in right, with Zimmerman batting 3rd and Lastings leading off. I wonder how long the "it's still early" excuse for Milledge sucking at leading off will be played. Dukes is the far superior CF but let's not start him, because he isn't buddy-buddy with Manny.
