Nice move - throwing at someone's head and giving a lame excuse afterwards..

I knew there was something about Beckett that rubbed me the wrong way. Now I have proof

They should make it an actual 6 game suspension. That'd be like a bench player getting suspended.

Maybe this means the Angels will actually remember this in October & win a postseason series against the Sox...

It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.

Beckett was the main instigator in the benches clearing as well. He threw at Abreu, then he came at Abreu after that, then when Sciosca was talking to Joe West, he started jawing with Scioscia.

Real easy to throw at someone's head when you never have to step up to the plate.

Probably not. Of course it's no guarantee that Boston makes the postseason given the division they are in.

According the league, Beckett was suspended and fined not only for the pitch, but for his behavior after the pitch that incited the benches to clear.

                  http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4067947

                  From the article:
MLB disciplinarian Bob Watson said Beckett was suspended and fined an undisclosed amount for the pitch, in Sunday's game at Anaheim, and for his "aggressive actions after the pitch that incited the bench-clearing incident." His suspension was due to begin Tuesday night, unless he appealed.

Exactly, thats one of the reasons why I dont like the DH.

While I certainly don't condone what Beckett did, there's no question that when an ump calls late time, ya gotta let the ball fly or risk injury. That said, definitely didn't have to fly up past Abreu's head.

Punk move or not, I wouldn't trade Beckett for anybody, as he may come off as a douche, but he's one of the hardest competitors in the game, especially come postseason time (well, aside from when he's hurt).

Not the same thing. If you suspend a pitcher for 6 starts you would have to suspend an everyday player 30 games to make things equal.

Well -according to Beckett, he was not going to stop his motion as to not hurt himself -- so was he still planning to go up and in on Abreu?

I mentioned this elsewhere on another board.

It's really hard to stop your motion and not risk injury. To me, a right handed pitcher seeing timeout late in his motion is going to pull the ball inside to complete the throw while also attempting to stop.

That's what I saw there. I saw Beckett already set up to throw inside, only to see timeout too late and tell himself to finish and not hurt himself. That will throw your accuracy off big time.

So, no, I don't fault Beckett for the tight pitch. I also don't fault Abreu for being upset. All he sees is a fastball near his noggin. He's gonna be upset. That's justified.

I do fault Beckett for making a scene afterwards. He didn't have to walk to the plate. He should have just gone back to the mound and let it be. Abreu was jawing for a minute but he was mostly talking to the catcher and ump and just pointing at Beckett.

Beckett got the benches up by moving in. Suspension deserved.
