I never said he wasnt the Cincy Kid or an Icon, I just said he was horrible to listen to on the radio. And I was right I told you I would get bashed for not liking Joe on the radio!
I just think people got caught up in Joe the person, he was a great guy and a legend in Cincy. With that being said that doesnt make him a great announcer. Like I said IMO he was terrible and really boring to listen to. His voice was just horrible for radio.

What I've always thought was awesome about baseball radio announcers is they seem to have a relationship with fans through the game more so than TV. I gotta tell you though, it's a shame a lot of these guys have been replaced by the next generation of cookie cutter young guys. No more Niehaus, Scully, Kalas, Buck...doesn't seem like the new guys have much style.

It's not local but I hate listening to the FOX Saturday crew - Buck & McCarver...not to mention the sideline guy, Rosenthals or w/e his name is.

I wonder how much of that is a product of going to broadcasting schools or majoring in communications or whatever these guys are doing. Seems like they get more and more generic sounding where as the older guys (especially Scully since he does the games by himself) sound like they are having a conversation with the viewer/listener. Of the newer guys Matt Vasgersian seems to have that conversation style rather than just another generic voice.

I can't stand Buck and McCarver. I don't watch Fox saturday anyway as i am usually at work but i hate having to listen to them during the playoffs and World Series.

Rosenthal is actually pretty good. He's got a lot of knowledge and to me he's a younger less biased Peter Gammons. He does some work for Sportsnet here in Canada and dishes out some good info, not to mention his writings on foxsports.com.

I'm the opposite. Maybe because it's just a change. I've been getting tired of Steve because he's been going on a couple years now. He's a guy who had x amount of voice lessons and isn't a sports/baseball guy.

I would like Rory and Rex. Everybody hates Rex, but gotta love his passion for the game

Greg Brown - Ultimate homer. He annoys me till no end because there is nothing negative the Pirates can do and nothing positive the other team can do in his eyes.

Bob Walk - Excellent. He knows the game well and is one of few announcers who will get on the Pirates when they screw up. I've heard him berate hitters when the opposing pitcher has walked 2 guys on 8 pitches and then the next hitter swings at the first pitch.

John Wehner - He knows the game, but he struggles with his speech at times. He's a born and raised Pittsburgh guy who unfortunately has a Pittsburgh accent (Pgh accent's never come across well...especially for an announcer! I'm glad I never got the accent!).

Neverett - I don't know his first name as this is his first year, but he's replacing Lanny Frattare who announced for more than 30 years. I was never a huge Frattare fan, but I do like Neverett. He seems to know the game and has a good voice for announcing.
                    .
I totally agree with you on Greg Brown. The guy is a total homer and thinks every good play made by a Pirates is "one of the best ever!" Bob Walk is good, except that occasionally he'll get fixated on something and won't shut up about it for a good two innings (like if a guy gets thrown out at home because he took a wide turn at third). Tim (?) Neverett is growing on me, probably because he just calls the game unlike Brown.

I've only heard Suzyn Waldman once, but that was enough for me. Didn't she cry one time on the air after a loss too? Ugh.

Michael Kay is the biggest tool I've ever heard on the air (and to think the man has won an Emmy...sad). Every time I have to hear "See-Ya!" it makes me want to punch something. Oh, and Michael, I KNOW the Yankees don't have f-ing names on the back of their jerseys. SHUT UP!

Steve Stone doesn't know anything about baseball? Okay, buddy.

Hawk is annoying, but is much more tolerable with Stone in the booth with him.

He's probably referring to Darrin Jackson who's just as clueless as the Hawk so the bashing was well within bounds

Anywho, I've watched the Rangers feed of the Jays game last night...Gotta say Josh Lewin has improved a bit. He's kinda homerish but there's times when his analyst (I dunno his name) doesn't say a thing and it sounds almost like a radio broadcast. The two of them have a nice banter as well and don't take the game TOO seriously yet are pretty fair and balanced.

Though everything to the analyst was "hit on a rope" and Lewin has a tendency to say that HRs have a "charge" in them.

I've noticed that as well. Hawk does seem to have calmed down a bit with Stone next to him. We'll have to wait and see though until the season is a bit farther along and the Sox start having calls go against them...he was real annoying the last couple years with that stuff.

Rex Hudler is not a bad color commentator although he is not good in MLB: The Show. I like Physioc, no problem with him. Vin Scully might be the best though. Too bad he doesn't broadcast for the Angels.

I dunno man, I was watching a NESN broadcast when the Sox were in LA and they had rotating color guys for some reason. Hudler was in the booth for an inning or two and was so grating I had to wonder how the hell the man got a gig doing broadcasting.

Maybe I just don't get it?

Nah, I understand. I think announcers are like music. Hudler can be a little over the top, but I think he meshes well with Physioc who I thnk is pretty low key. Good contrast in styles.
