Stupid stupid move...

How can you fire a manager when his ace & SS are on the DL, and virtually half his lineup or more is in a slump?

Upton just started picking it up about a week ago, Conor Jackson hasn't done a damn thing all year, and basically Mark Reynolds and Felipe Lopez have been the only constant in that lineup - and when that's the case NO MANAGER is going to have any success.

Can't fire the players, but at least give the man a chance to get key guys back healthy and if they're still struggling give him the pink slip.

his firing is not just from the start of this season. after 2007 when the snakes went 90-72, and made it to the nlcs, expectations were raised. then in 08 they blow it down the stretch, which would make any gm mad. now they are 8 games back of the dodgers. i can understand this move. josh byrnes is just trying to motivate his players. there is no reason that eric byrnes and conor jackson should be hitting below .200

In Melvin's defense he didn't have an adequate bullpen to compete...which points to the GM.

Upton tailed off (which is expected given his youth), Brynes was out the entire 2nd half. They added Dunn (good), and then didn't resign him...relying on the same lineup who failed the team in '08 - prior to Dunn's arrival.

Your pitching can only take you so far...Especially w/o run support and a bullpen to save games.

Not to mention one of the biggest success stories of 2008, Carlos Quentin, was traded away prior to '08! For what? To me the GM is sucking, and trying to cover his tracks - which is nothing new, but unfortunate for the D'Back as Melvin was a good manager.

Very pre-mature as Pared stated.

The DBacks have talented hitters who for some reason haven't been able to pull it together for years. There 90 win season was a nice story, but remember they were outscored by 20 runs during the regular season. Sooner or later, it's gonna catch up to you.

Upton, Chris Young, Conor Jackson (who should be hitting .310 routinely), and Mark Reynolds are all really really talented. Reynolds should not be striking out 200+ times in a season, he's too talented to do that.

I work in the DBacks system and there's been rumblings going on since last year. This team is too talented to not be competitive with LA, especially playing against the Pads, Giants, and Rockies. Hinch is a real head scratcher though.

I'm not biased at all. I'm a Mariners fan. I like the DBacks, I root for them, I work in the system, but if they win/lose it doesn't bother me at all.

The Conor Jackson-Ryan Howard thread has nothing to do with this thread so I don't know why you're bringing it in here. Howard and Dunn strike out a ton like Reynolds, yes, but they also have really high OBP's. Reynolds on the other hand, not that great.

There is absolutely ZERO way that this lineup should be statistically one of, if not the worst in baseball. Especially when they play their division games against weak opponents with so-so pitching staffs:

Felipe Lopez, 2B
Justin Upton, RF
Stephen Drew, SS
Mark Reynolds, 3B
Chad Tracy 1B
Conor Jackson, LF
Eric Byrnes, CF
Chris Snyder, C

That's a pretty solid lineup 1-9 to if you ask me (I know Drew is injured). They are way too young and talented to not be challenging LA, going back to last year.

Rather than fire Bob Melvin, they need to get a new hitting coach...it seems like every player is always in a slump.
