7 out of 10 top modern-day home run hitters on the juice...and counting

So is anything about baseball over the past 30 years not a farce?

If you're keeping track at home, seven of the top 10 home run hitters since 1980 are now linked to steroids: Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Alex Rodriguez, Rafael Palmeiro, Sammy Sosa, Gary Sheffield and Manny Ramirez.

That leaves Ken Griffey, Frank Thomas, Jim Thome.....for now. Carlos Delgado is up there, too. Would anyone be surprised to find out if one or all of those guys were juicing, too?

What exactly are we watching on the baseball field these days? It's a sad, sad state.

Do you only post about steroids in the baseball forums? For someone who hates the game so much and believes everything and everyone is tainted, you sure do post enough in here.

All you ever do is bash baseball man, your posts are all the same, You hate baseball, we don't care, I don't love football like I do baseball, but you don't see me on the NFL Board bashing the NFL. Most people hate baseball either because they are too ignorant to understand the game or maybe you just don't like it but we don't care.

The same thing we watch on the football field...a bunch of juiced up, overpayed guys, playing a sports that many of us love.

And no, I wouldn't be surprised if any of those other names popped up for steroid use. NOTHING surprises anymore when talking about what pro's would do to gain an edge or extend a career. I would think that would be a given at this point and, as an adult, it's par for the course.

The kid in me doesn't care though, and still LOVES the game.

          uhh so?

The majority of the people I know can care less who roids up...I grew up playing the game and it doesn't bother me one bit.

Exactly, Freelancer do you really think that football players don't use steroids? Come on be realistic, Athletes will do anything to make themselves better. And I'm not gonna lie I wouldn't trade seeing Mark McGwire hit 70 homeruns for anything.

If you don't like baseball then don't watch it.

Other people like me could give a **** about who was on roids, and just watch the game because we love baseball. Vin Scully put it best last night:

"Hi, everybody, and a very pleasant Thursday evening to you, wherever you may be. The Dodgers and the city of Los Angeles and all of California and for that matter, all of baseball, still shocked and stunned over the suspension of Manny Ramirez. We'll have more to say about that a little bit later on -- but no one man stops baseball ..."

Damn I love Vin Scully, I wish I could hear him every day, instead of these idiot sportswriters that no one could give a **** about and that just print negative articles and have no real love for baseball. * coughs Plasche

I am betting that we soon hear about Pedro Cerrano coming up positive.

i sure hope not...he seemed like a class act.

I love baseball; played it for 13 years. But I hate what's it's become.

My favorite stat in baseball is stolen bases because I love that part of the game. You don't see them any more, because everybody in the lineup is hitting home runs. Steroids, small parks, juiced balls, etc, have taken the beauty out of the game to a large degree.

And yes, I understand that other sports have it too, but baseball statistics are sacred, and now the whole statistical history of baseball is skewed beyond recognition.

It's a gross double standard but football just doesn't get scrutinized the way baseball does due to the nature of that sport. We all know those guys are gonna beat the hell out of each other and have short lives even WITHOUT steroids so it doesn't matter that much.

Baseball on the other hand is far more traditional. We like to look at the numbers. There's the traditional aspect of your grandfather taking your father and your father taking you to the ballgame and trying to compare guys of earlier eras to the guys of today with the stats and such. Everything has been thrown out of whack due to the steroid era and now it's hard not to be cynical when someone puts up amazing numbers.

That's the tragedy of the steroid era IMO.

There has been cheating in the sport from the beginning. From spitballs to the use of amphetamines in the 70s and 80s and now the steroid/performance enhancer boom. No era was perfectly clean. Period.

Within the last two weeks Dexter Fowler stole five bases in a game, Jacoby Ellsbury stole home plate and Carl Crawford tied the record with six stolen bases in one game. What sport have you been watching?

Hmmm you have some valid points you made but if you have been watching baseball lately you would have noticed that small ball is coming back, and Home runs are way down. All the youth and new talent coming in just makes this game more exciting. The Beauty of the game has never left, it's been marred by this scandal a bit, but it's still there. Baseball is stronger then ever and it will continue to build on it. Nothing will keep this game down.
