I thought your post was insanely idiotic until I read that last sentence and it finally made sense. I wouldn't prefer Eckstein to Pujols in any situation but agreed Pujols' job is primarily to drive in runs, not to try and get the runner over to 3rd, hit and run, or bunt the guy over...If asking for the best situational hitter then Pujols wouldn't be at the top of the list.

However, if I have a runner on 1st w/0 out I'd rather have Pujols AB than Eckstein sacrifice an out to get the runner to 2nd...I find the probability higher that a possible run would score if Pujols bats than if Eckstein would sacrifice the guy over.

It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.

Blzr you're taking what I said out of context. You're absolutely right it's not Albert's job to move a runner over. Situational hitting isn't just moving a runner over. What I meant by that is any situation, Albert can and will deliver unlike anyone else that I've ever seen play the game. What do you need the man to do at the plate, and he'll do it.

Pure as in doesnt need refinement? Thats hard to know. Its hard to know who puts in more time than the other. If you mean pure as in most refined, its Pujols. The guy is amazing.

I don't know what a pure hitter is but Pujols is the best hitter to come into the game since Ted Williams.

            .334/.426/.625, 171 OPS+

That's the career line for Pujols as of today. He's without question the best hitter in the sport.

              Pujols.

I think Adrian Gonzales should get some consideration as well. If he was playing anywhere other than Petco he would be putting up some crazy numbers.

Re: Who is the best pure hitter in the league?

Pujols is gross, not human, computer robot hitting machine. He is unreal... now that I got that out of the way...

Joe Mauer is unreal, probably has the sweetest, most fundamentally sound swing, great eye, and unreal professionalism when it comes to playing the game day in a day out.

When I think pure hitter, I don't immediately think stats, although it's what the pure hitters put up. I think of a perfect swing, I think of Griffey's follow through, Pujols after he gets a hold of a Brad Lidge mistake, or when Joe Mauer inside out ones oppo for a double.

Every day I find myself giving Mauer more respect. Always thought he was pretty good but with the eye and added pop, gotta give him more love.

The realist in me says Pujols.
The homer in me says Miguel Cabrera.

Same as us here in Minnesota who have watched him his whole career. A lot of us never fully embraced him because he was a 6' 5" 220lb slap hitter. At my work we even started a 'When will Joe hit his 1st HR this year' pool. He ended that with his 1st AB back. He's making it look easy now.

                        A footnote on Pujols’ consistency…
In his career, including the postseason, Pujols has played in 1,338 games.
                        - He has struck out once in a game 387 times. Team record: 207-180, .519
                        - He has two Ks in a game only 69 times, including Wed. in Milwaukee. Team record: 40-29, .579
                        - He has three Ks in a game only 8 times. Team record: 4-4, .500
                        - He has never struck out four (or more) times in a game.
                        - He has avoided striking out in 874 games. Team record: 503-371, .575
No strikeouts by Pujols in 65.3 percent of the games he’s played in; amazing stuff…

                        Just an amazing stat...

When 1/4 to 1/5 of all your hits come from infield hits, you aren't a pure hitter. Take away his ability to beat out those weak grounders, and he's a career .260 hitter. Relying on your speed instead of an ability to hit the ball solidly does not make you a pure hitter.

                            But for real, easily Pujols.

Career .260 hitter without infield singles? I'd like whatever you're smoking.

                                This.

Ichiro reached 3,000 career hits by the age of 34. I don't care if he played some of his career in Japan or not, that's ridiculous. The scary part is he has an outside chance to reach 3,000 MLB hits, which would put him ahead of Rose as the all time hit leader.
