Re: Is your new MGR better than the old?
He's a perfect manager for this team, though. He's been a minor league coach/manager his whole career, and this team is one of the youngest in recent memory and has several young guys due up soon. He's an ideal mentor for them.Comment

Just curious what people around OS think.
Ones that I can think of:
Melvin vs. Hinch
Girardi vs. Torre
Gibbons vs. Gaston
Tracy vs. Russell
Geren vs. Macha
Baker vs. Miley
Bochy vs. Alou
Pinellia vs. Baker
Maddon vs. Piniella
Leyland vs. Trammell (Jim Leyland's been gettin a lot of crap lately)
Randolph vs. J.Manuel
Garner vs. Cooper
Black vs. Bochy
Don Wakamatsu is AWESOME btw. I'm glad the M's didn't go with Cora.NHL: Buffalo Sabres, Chicago Blackhawks

Re: Is your new MGR better than the old?
Isn't this more of a: Is your team good now or worse?
If the team is successful everyone is going to like the new manager. If the team doesn't have the same success everyone is going to like the old manager.
So, is it the manager or the team's success or lack of that really determines whether one manager is better than the other?
It's obviously the success or lack of so I have a hard time really seeing the value in this question."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Is your new MGR better than the old?
Well the Mariners were 45-33 with Mike Hargrove (not that he was that great), and then John McLaren took over and I perceived an immediate let down in the intensity of the team just on attitude. McLaren finished with 2 less wins and 8 more losses (43-41). Or when Keith Gilbertson took over the Huskies football team he said "I never really felt like 'the guy.'" He won what, 5 games in 2 years? When Bob Weiss took over for Nate McMillian the intensity level dropped again, he was fired after a 13-17 start.
There are managers/coaches who are better than others and win wherever they go. I asked the question because it seems like Bob Geren is getting less than he should out of the A's , Ron Washington is getting more than his predecessors did out of Texas, and I think the Marlins should be better than they are. I think this is a fair question because what I'm really asking is "did your last guy get fired too soon, and was it the right move." Not always tied to wins and losses. Did Grady Little deserve to get fired in Boston? He won. He lost an elimination playoff game and got canned.Comment
