How is that 1 year such a big deal?
Do you know how much can happen in one year?

Any number of bad things can happen to him. He could be mildly injured in a car crash, or he could be killed in one. He could break a wrist or a shoulder. He could tear a ligament. He could lose an arm.

Anything can happen to him, and if he hurts himself teams aren't going to be as interested, if at all.

bryce harper wants to be a yankee?

look at this quote from an interview between tome verducci and and superstar in the making bryce harper

"Be in the Hall of Fame, definitely," says Harper when asked by Verducci about his goals. "Play in Yankee Stadium. Play in the pinstripes. Be considered the greatest baseball player who ever lived. I can't wait."

if this happened after a short tenure with the nationals i would litterally have a heart attack from the overwhelming exitement

They call him the Lebron James of baseball, but at least with Lebron New York fans waited until he was drafted to talk about signing him as a free agent.

I think he should shoot for the stars first, like getting that drivers license, that GED, maybe a date to prom, or a study buddy for business calc and statistics.

I don't know if I would let this fly if he was my son, Kornheiser made a good point today, how old is this kid going to be if/when he's drafted, sent to the minors and living out of a motel with the rest of his team that's going to be older. I have friends in the minors and I know that if I was a parent, I wouldn't want my 17 year old son getting involved with some of the shenanigans they get into (wow, shenanigans just doesn't seem to fit any of the stories my friends have told me haha).

Baseball = Much higher rate of failure when you're a sure thing vs basketball... I know most people know this... but he is taking a risk.

The list of sure things that never made it is way too long in the wold of baseball.

This kid is worth a lot of money, and he knows it. If the nationals won't pay he what hes worth, he will find a more wealthy team that will.

Aside from art majors, does anyone do anything after high school for anything aside from money? I mean, I know art majors go to school to have an excuse to do drugs, but I think everyone else does what they do for money.

Re: Bryce Harper to be eligible for 2010 draft

Ok, he is taking a risk. But are you guys really thinking about this here?

He is getting his GED. He will attend JUCO for one year.

If baseball doesn't work out for him, he'll know by his early 20's. That's more than enough time for him to collect his check (which will be huge!) and then go back to school to get a degree.

Why do people go to college? Do you go so you can work for somebody and make minimum wage for the rest of your life? No. You go because you want to be successful at what you do (at least I hope that's why people go...).

The kid is a good baseball player. He doesn't need college for that. So, why should he not do this? It would be bad parenting to tell your kid, "Listen son, you're good at baseball and you'll make millions, be famous, have everything you want, but I want you to go back to school and waste your time there because well...because I said so."

College isn't only when you're 18-22. Like I said, the guy will know if he sucks at baseball by his early 20's. The risk he's taking is starting his life a little later if baseball fails. But, he'll have millions of dollars at that point and he will have completed one year of college.

You know what, I take it back. There is no risk. How can there be one? The kid is going to make millions of dollars and have a GED.

Ok, the next topic. A 17 year old hanging out with older men. Yea, I can see that concern as a parent. But, really, it's no different than a 17 year old in college with 21 year old seniors. How old do you think the guys in Rookie/A ball are? They aren't much older than 21. And there are more rules in the minors than in college dorms. For real. Sure guys break the rules, but if the parents taught Harper right then he'll focus on baseball and only get into some shenanigans.

Honestly, at 17, you can't baby the kid anymore. A 17 year old is gonna experiment and test the world. If he's on the road with older men or in college with older men, he's still going to want to be with older women.

I don't see him going down that path...with the way his parents seem I could see them traveling with him while he's in the minors, which would significantly decrease the chances of early drug/alcohol use.

                            Bad example.

                            1. Hamilton righted himself.

                            2. Hamilton didn't start experimenting with drugs until he was 20 years old. Are you going to suggest he was too young to be in the minors then?
