Tony Pena Jr. - The Worst Ever?

So I'm going through some stuff on B-R for some ratings tweaks in MLB 09 and I come across this...

    Tony Pena Jr.: 282 PA, .156/.179/.193, 0 OPS+, 10 RC

That is Tony Pena's combined line from the beginning of 2008 to today. I sat at my computer in disbelief for well over a minute. I kept checking over and over to make sure my computer was okay and even checked my eyes in the mirror to make sure they weren't going crazy all over the place. But nope, it's real. He actually is that bad.

Seriously, how does any position player put up a 0 in OPS+? It is beyond comprehension. The fact this man got paid over 400 grand last year is just disgusting. If someone sucked this bad at any other job, they'd be fired and blacklisted from working in the industry again. Imagine walking into a bank and when you withdrew money, the teller ripped it out of your hand and burned it with a lighter. Or going to a restaurant only to have the waiter take your plate of food and slam it on the wall before you had a chance to eat the food. Those might not even be harsh enough comparisons. They might actually be better than Pena.

I challenge anyone to find a worse stretch of 282 plate appearances or more for ANY player in history. YankeePride, Sandman42, snepp; all you stat junkies, do your worst. I really think this is the apex of terrible.

I'd have to agree. It's pretty bad when acquiring Yuniesky Betancourt is an upgrade to what you had previously.

Just further evidence of the ineptitude of the Royals management.

They even chose to keep Pena on the roster after trading for Betancourt, that's indefensible.

It really is amazing. As awful as Betancourt is, he still represents a considerable upgrade. Ridiculous.

I was thinking maybe his father in later years was nearly as bad but while his average was crummy he still had an OPS+ in the 60s which is atrocious but at least it's better then Junior.

I wonder if Pena has compromising pictures of Royals' management?

They wouldn't be fired if their boss was just as inept and horrible at his job.

                  This guy:

                  http://www.baseball-reference.com/pl...bi01-bat.shtml

Bill Bergen. In 1911, had 250 PA with a -4 OPS+. Career of +21. I'd say that would be pretty F'n horrific.

the bright side is, given the era, I doubt he was as relatively overpaid as Pena Jr...lol.

How on earth did he manage to stick around for 11 years with a career .170 batting average?

This is the only guy I could find in the RetroSheet era with an OPS of 23 or lower and 275+ PA's.

                      Look who he played for.

Tony Pena Sr. was never a great hitter by any means but at his worst he was still better than his son. I'm guessing their are probably a few pitchers on the Royals staff that could out hit Pena Jr..

Looks like it's time for Pena Jr. to learn how to throw a knuckleball.

I'm confident Zack Greinke could out-hit TPJ any day of the week. I guess TPJ does have something Greinke doesn't have: a career 0.00 ERA.

Every day that TPJ is on the team is another day I grow closer to giving up on this franchise.
