one thing i don't understand about pitchers

i know that pitchers' main focus and talent is to pitch. but the thing i don't understand is why wouldn't they be better hitters?

i mean, who would understand pitches and how to pitch and how hitters hit more than pitchers? also to my understanding is that high school teams best hitters usually pitch. i don't mean batting 300, but for most pitchers batting 200-225 would seem reasonable for a player who has to know how to get guys out

The best hitters hit in 35 % of their at bats. Their main reason for being on a professional baseball team is to hit, and yet they get a hit in 35% of their at bats. Pitchers probably spend about 90% of their training on pitching. Considering pitchers spend maybe 5-10% of their training on batting, and batters spend about 90-95% of their training on battings, it's interesting that pitchers can hit .100 when batters hit .300 with 9 times the amount of batting practice.

The reason they can't hit is because they are drafted because of their pitching ability, not on how well they can hit. Yes a lot of high school's best hitters are pitchers, but thats about the pitcher's hitting level, high school. A high school player againts a pro isn't going to get a hit ofen. And on top of that they spend almost all their practice time pitching.

i'm not really talking about in terms of ability because they are in the majors to pitch. what i'm saying is because pitchers practice mostly on pitching, why wouldn't they know how to hit better since they know the mechanics of how pitches look and how to get a batter out. also what about veteran pitchers. they already are developed so why not concentrate more on hitting

To a point they do have a slight advantage. A pitcher is more likely to guess where a pitch is going to be thrown and what pitch is going to be thrown. They do know how pitches look, but pitches look much different from the mound then they do in the box. Now catchers, to me they should be excellent hitters. They should have a great idea of what the strike zone is because they watch tons of pitches come in every day. And as far as veterans practicing their hitting, I have no clue.

I used to be a pitcher and was quite good at it. I was also for 2 seasons the best hitter on my team. Then I gradually began to lose my batting coordination and I couldn't hit anything anymore.

To this day I still can't hit... .

Pitchers are idiots. It's the fact that catchers don't hit better is what suprises me. If any position knows what the next pitch is it's the catcher, not the pitcher.
