IMO he hasnt had the oppurtunity.. he has had massive injuries the last few years.

edit: he was rolling along a few years ago.. and then he got his hand broke when he got hit by a pitch.. screwed him up.. and then he had the same knee injury that ended mcgwires career.

but this year.. he is bouncing back.. altho he hasnt been playing everyday.. he is looking really good.. hittin near .320-.330..;. has around 4 or 5 homeruns in limited time.

If I remember right he hasn't really had the chance to show his true stuff. Hasn't he been switched around in the batting lineup, like he doesn't have a diffident role? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Ya, but this guy was a first round pick...TWICE.

When he came up from the minors in St. Louis, he was the guy who was gonna replace Big Mac. Not by hitting 70 HR's, but by being the best player on the team. And his 2000 and 2001 seasons previewed what he could be.

                    .320-40-110-25 kind of player.

But he has yet to last a full season in the bigs, and he has faded into the shadows, and everyone forgets how GOOD he should of been, and still can be. Probably because of Pujols comming onto the seen.

I like JD Drew, a lot. But he has yet to reach even close to his potential.

I am a regular follower of the Cardinals and here in St. Louis there was never talk of J.D. Drew "replacing" Mark McGwire. Drew was brought up from the minors near the end of the 1998 season and appeared in 14 games. If you recall the '98 season, McGwire was locked in the home run record chase with Sammy Sosa and no one was anticipating his retirement. We looked at Drew as an up-and-coming addition to the team, not a replacement for anyone else.

On not playing a full season, some numbers: In his four full seasons in the majors (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002) he has never appeared in more than 135 games, and he has done that twice (2000 and 2002). In 1999 and 2001, he appeared in 104 and 109 games, respectively.

Regarding his role, he is considered the "regular" right fielder, or as regular as an oft-injured player can be. Because he has spent so much time recovering from one injury or another, he has seen a lot of pinch-hitting duty during those times he was slowly working his was back into the lineup.

Many feel that a player needs two years to fully recover from major injuries or surgeries. Such may be the case with Drew if the kid doesn't hurt himself again. I was at the Memorial Day game Monday and he was diving around the outfield going after fly balls. Drew has an outstanding work ethic and plays with lots of heart. He is known around here as generally quiet, hasn't gotten into any kind of trouble, and is deeply religious. He is very well liked by St. Louis fans. But like any other sport, performance on the field is the main measuring stick and Drew's lack of durability may number his days with a team that has already worked budget wonders, signing the likes of Scott Rolen, Jim Edmonds, Edgar Renteria, etc. to long-term contracts for less than they could have gotten on the open market. Still, the payroll for a mid-size market team is about topped out and if Drew doesn't turn things around regarding the frequent injuries, his days with the Cards may be numbered. The one thing that scares the team is that if they let him go elsewhere, he will suddenly reach his full potential.

i agree almost.. but id have to say alot of people are very anti-drew.. just go visit the baseball forums at stltoday.com.. tons of people want him gone.

question: would you trade edmonds in the offseason to make room budget-wise for drew?
