    Re: Your Opinion on Questec

But there is not a perfect strike zone. How do you have a machine accommodate human inconsistency? I still think they should give it a rest.

NBA doesn't have a machine to see if they make the right calls or not. There is a big discrepancy as to what a foul in the NBA is and what isn't. NFL doesn't have a machine to determine what a penalty is, it’s all interpretative. Baseball doesn't need a machine, it needs players and coaches to critique umps and determine who should be deciding their balls, strikes and outs.

Exactly, and if they're so 'perfect' why don't they have a red light go off for a strike and a blue light to go off for a ball instead of having the ump there?

I actually worked for Questec. I operated one of their systems here in Houston. All I have to say is that they are VERY unprofessional. The system is flawed in that it doesn't have depth perception. And a lot of times its in accurate. And it is VERY operator dependent. If you make even the slightest mistake, the whole thing can be off. (trust me i know about that.. hehe.) Its a good idea, but its not the perfect system. Thus not being the perfect system, then they need to find something better and ditch Questec.

if they keep the the umps will seem like robots in games. where the zone is always the same. there is no fun in watching a game if there aren't a few bad calls. an example. in my game last night the other team was getting calls where the ball was about 6 inches off the plate or even bouncing in the dirt. our team (away) didn't get anything. out zone was pretty much belt high middle of the plate otherwise no call. our coach would ask the catcher how it looked and th ump would yell at the catcher. i think this Questec should be take out of the ballparks and just let the umps do their job. they get paid for it not some dumb computer thing.

you dont need a machine...just evaluate the umps performance, say once a month, based on their calls versus the strike zone in the RULEBOOK!!....letters to the knees, it aint brain surgery here

                              Idea? - GOOD!
                              Execution of idea? -BAD!

I agree with slugox here. Umpires need to be evaluated. Unforunately, there are too many bugs for this tool to be used effectively. If MLB insists on using it, use it as a tool, not a judge.

I watch many Royals games, and umps always squeeze the Royal rookie pitchers. It's almost sick to watch. Schilling is whining about it because he got the calls that Questec thinks are balls and now he's getting squeezed.

There needs to be some uniformity, not exactness. Questec should have been started in the minors to train the umps on how to call balls and strikes.
