I don't think there was ever a time Pete rose was the best player on his team, let alone the greatest of his generation.
So baseball's all-time hit leader wasn't that great? Really? HA...

And pointing out he didn't hit a lot of home runs just shows how one dimensional a lot of baseball fans have become. If you look at a lot of the players mentioned in the thread, they are for the most part home run hitters. Sure, homers are great to see, but they aren't the be all the SportsCenter generation has come to believe.

Don't call me one-dimensional. If you think one-dimensional Rose deserved to be called the greatest @ any time, then you're the one w/the problem. The "greatest" should do more than just one thing. There were much better hitters. Much better fielders. Much better run producers. Much better base stealers. Rose is nowhere close to being the best of any generation in any catergory.

It's not that Rose wasn't great. I just find it hard to believe that Rose was the greatest player of the 60's and 70's when he was probably the 3rd best player on his team.

1975 - Tony Perez, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, George Foster
1976 - Joe Morgan, George Foster
1977 - Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, George Foster, Ken Griffey, Dan Driessen
                1978 - George Foster
                1979 - Mike Schmidt
                1980 - Mike Schmidt
                1981 - Mike Schmidt
1982 - Mike Schmidt, Bo Diaz, Gary Matthews
                1983 - Mike Schmidt

I'm sure there is no need to bring up his last 3 seasons. From what I've seen, only 1966 could one make an argument he was the best on his team. I put the asterik on 1973, because he won the MVP. But I can't picture why.

                Rose - .338(led NL) 5 HR, 64 RBI, 115 runs, .401 OB, .437 slug, 10 SB,
                Morgan - .290, 26 HR, 82 RBI, 116 runs, .406 OB, .493 slug, 67 SB
                Perez - .314, 27 HR, 101 RBI, 73 runs, .393 OB, .527 slug, 3 SB

Morgan bested him in every catergory except hitting percentage in 54 fewer PA's. Plus, Morgan made just 9 errors @ 2B, Rose made 3 in LF.

Rose as "the greatest of his generation" is a laugh.
