WTF has Happened to Ben Grieve?

I remember this guy was about to be a star with the A's and then he went to Tampa and has been awful.


And then this happened yesterday in a game vs. the Yanks



The game ended with Ben Grieve taking a third called strike with a runner on third, then a scolding from Devil Rays manager Lou Piniella.

Piniella said he asked the easygoing Grieve about the last pitch and didn't like the player's response.

"He says, `I thought it was high.' I said, 'Why didn't you say something?' He said it doesn't matter. I said, 'What the hell do you mean it doesn't matter?' It matters to me and it matters to everybody else," Piniella said, his voice rising.

"Look, Rivera is a tough pitcher. I'm not expecting anything. I'm expecting if you think the ball is high, you tell the umpire it's high instead of walking off to the damn dugout. ... It does matter. It matters to me, and it matters to a lot of damn people in this clubhouse. When it starts mattering to everybody, we'll start winning more games around here."

Grieve said he was taking Piniella's harsh words "in stride."

"I think it's the frustration boiling over. I'm not going into everything he said," Grieve said. "I don't think it was because I struck out."

He hasn't had a good year in.... a lot of seasons.

He sucks now.

Somewhere along the way, he just got exposed for what he is: an average major league hitter. His fielding and arm have always been brutal. The thing is, when he first came up, he looked like he was going to be a hitting machine. Then pitchers started to figure out how to pitch him, and he never adjusted his game.

If he had a lot of power, he would be the perfect DH, but he doesn't. Right now, he is looking a lot like Ken Phelps to me.

I saw the clip of Pinella chewing out Grieve after he watched that third strike go by. Wow Pinella was not happy. I still think Grieve has some potential, I just dont know if he will ever reach it.

Ben Grieve is WAAAY too easy going. He probably doesn't work as hard as he should with his limited skills. I guess that's what tampa gets for picking up from the Oakland scrap heap.

I can still understand his walking off. I mean, if he's been strugling, he ain't feeling it. He just wants to get out of there, and try to work it out on his own. I can totally understand that even though nothing will change by argueing with the umpire...it can help the club moral I suppose. But still....

If I were in a slump, and I knew that I can either walk off....or argue, get nothing changed, and THEN walk off with the same result....I'll just walk off.....


I also think that Lou made a big mistake coming to TB...he NEEDS to win, and he ain't gunna do that at TB. So...I think a lot of his yelling and fuss was mostly that he isn't winning....not that Grieve walked off.
