Gotta disagree. Lou isn't gonna change that team in one year, but they needed a guy like him in the clubhouse. He doesn't take 50% effort. He wants his players to care all the time.

The Mariners were garbage before Piniella took over. He made that team a contender. Tampa Bay may not have many stars in their roster, but Pinellia is a smart man. He knows that the Yanks are gettin old. The Red Sox still can't figure it out and the Blue Jays are still very young (but can be the best team in a few years). He knows he can make the Rays that team as well.

They need to wake up and start playing harder. With more emotion. More care. More "matter". Ben Grieve took that Mo pitch like nothing. 2 strikes, game on the line, you do anything to hit that ball. Pinella wants these guys to realize that every game should be a game 7.

I think he's the perfect man for the job. Just like Pena is the perfect man for the Royals.

oh, yea he did. But I don't mean rookie year. I mean of hte players chosen ROY in the 90's, he is the worst. Not rookie numbers, just overall numbers.

Theres a bunch of busts. Cardova, Listach, Mondesi(to a lesser extent), Tood Hollandsworth, didn't Jason Jennings just win it, Bob Hamelin bunch of pretty crappy players win the award. Atleast he still has some "potential". Most of them turn out to be good players but he's far from an exception.

Can't forget Walt Weiss... however I think he won it in '89, but still

I think winning ROY, Heisman, and "best new artists" at the grammys are pretty much the "kiss if death" for people of said professions.. not all the time, but most of them.

He didn't win ROY, did he? I DO remember he was supposed to be the hottest pitching prospect the A's had ever seen.... signed this crazy contract that limited him from sooooooooooo many activities, the guy couldn't even mow his yard! Then he just went to poop.

Very similar story for the Yanks prospect Brien Taylor, who broke his hand in a bar fight and his career was over, before it even started.. I think he got a season or two in at Albany, that's about it.
