Oh, the Mets. They could only do themselves one better by rehiring Steve Phillips and making him an advisor to the President."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Near mutiny in Toronto!Lo
Ah, I didn't peruse the papers this morning. Well CRAP!
Hopefully the new prexy keeps AA as a courtesy for one year then throw him off this sinking ship.
BTW did you hear the rumor that JP is being considered for the asst. GM job for the Mets? As you know the assistant is usually the mouthpiece for the GM and well....NYC will have a field day with JP if they let him speak to the media much.Comment

Re: Near mutiny in Toronto!Lo
Paul Godfrey is a two-faced hypocrite...He was the one who kept JP 3 years longer than he should've. Kept praising him when asked why he hasn't been fired yet and now he goes on the radio and talks bad about JP, how he's changed and he would've fired him if he was still President. Complete B.S. He was J.P.'s biggest apologist and he's just trying to save face. Couldn't be more happier that both are gone.Comment

From Keith Law's chat today:
Eddie (Milwaukee)
What was Steve Phillips thinking? Almost trading a 19 year old David Wright for Jose Cruz Jr.? Ridiculous.
Klaw (1:42 PM)
I've been asked about that trade rumor for three years but never answered while Ricciardi was still GM. The offer was made, though; I was there when the call came in. It was the first time I'd heard of Wright, since I wasn't with Toronto in 2001 nor had I followed the draft when Wright was in it. JP's reaction was, "I'm not trading a major league player for some guy in the Sally League." And that was pretty much that. We had a chance to trade Cruz after that for Rafael Soriano, but JP refused to do it unless Seattle included Clint Nageotte, who, at the time, was a pretty hot prospect. It's weird; I can't remember some things that happened last week but I remember those conversations (over seven years ago now) like they just took place.

Re: Near mutiny in Toronto!Lo
Another example of a JP blunder. It didn't make any sense to turn down that deal because the Jays non-tendered Cruz Jr. after the season. For some reason they felt getting nothing was better than a young prospect in David Wright. I know the Jays had Hinske at 3B at the time but your goal should be to obtain as much talent as possible regardless of what position the player plays.Comment
