Well I looked up a couple of the classic collapses and none come close to this year's Tigers however this year's Tigers remind me an awful lot of "The Phold".

I'll let the wiki page answer what I mean:

Mauch came tantalizingly close to the World Series on three occasions. In late September 1964, his Phillies had a record of 90-60, a 6½ game lead in the National League with 12 games left to play, and were starting a 7-game home stand. Mauch decided to start his two pitching aces, Jim Bunning and Chris Short, in 7 of the last 10 games, 6 of those starts on 2 days rest (all of which they lost). The Phillies faded, losing 10 games in a row before winning their last 2 games to finish one game behind the St. Louis Cardinals in a collapse infamously known as the "Phold."

The Tigers are good at keeping the AL Central leader seat warm for so long, only for it to be taken away on the last day. And to have it done two times out of the last four years by the same team in the same fashion. Terrible.

I can't believe how automatic an out Laird was in this game. It seems there were runners in scoring position in every time he was up to the plate. Yet he didn't knock anyone in. Not even a sac fly or RBI groundout. And then to swing at an obvious ball four that would've walked in a run and possbily continued what could've been a long rally. Embarrassing.

You know what's crazy? During the game that idiot Ron Darling said this was Jim Leyland's best managing job of the Tigers since he's been there. I had to shake my head because I knew that this game would go against them.

As soon as they walked Young (I think) to face Casilla I said to myself: "Casilla is gonna win the game".

BTW here's something I found in the Fox Sports write up that Tiger fans are gonna hate to see:

The Tigers became the first team in baseball history to blow a three-game lead with four games left.

I thought the complete opposite. Actually, I was wrong about the whole inning.

When Gomez came up I thought easy out, but he gets a hit. Then when Casilla is up, I was thinking there's no way in hell he gets a hit.

Re: One Game Playoff: Tigers vs Twins

All I can say is it is perfectly fitting for the Tigers to end on the season on a game where they missed numerous opportunities to win , that is what they did all season specifically down the stretch. They were incompetent for much of the season when it came to getting runners in from 3rd with less than two outs and the same thing came back to bite them tonight.

I think the ump did blow that one play as Inge was hit by that pitch with the bases loaded but the Tigers still had two outs to get the job done themselves. They had their opportunity but blew it.

The only silver linen I can think of from this game was the way Porcello pitched. He gave them a great effort and showed unbelievable composure for a guy his age. He will be a great picther in this league in the future. I like the Tiger's future alot with Verlander, Jackson and Porcello as three talented young picthers.

On the subject on Leyland, I want this guy gone to be perfectly honest. His decisons these last couple weeks in particular have been terrible. Sitting Polanco and starting Figuero against Chicago were two inexcusable moves. Then in this game he takes Ordonez quite possibly the hottest hitter on the team out of the game for defensive reasons with only a one run lead for Clete Thomas knowing full well the Twins could tie the game. Now you have your third hitter out of the game if that happens, which it did. Bottom line I am sick of this guy over managing games, making odd decisions on a day to day basis on who to play and going on his "gut" more so than logic.

As a whole I am disgusted by this team and Leyland. One of the biggest choke jobs ever to let a 7 game lead so late in the season slip away. Kudos for the Twins for playing great down the stretch but this thing should have been put away. All they had to do was win the two series from Kansas City and Chicago.

Good. God. Being at that game almost killed me. Wow.

Alexi Casilla, just when I thought you couldn't get any dumber, you go and do something like this... and totally redeem yourself!

Wow..one of the best games i've watched in a very long time. Twins got tough when they had too and made the clutch plays when they had too. Tigers made some clutch plays too.. it was a good game for both teams..its sad one has to lose because they both deserve to move on regardless what others say.

Twin's TOOK this game from the tigers by clutch plays and having heart when the odds were against them during a few key situations..a sign of a great ball club fella's. There are very few teams that can stay calm and collective during situations like having the bases loaded, no outs and post season play is on the line.. shows the twins character.

No the Tigers deserved to lose this ballgame. The Twins took advantage of their opportunities while the Tigers squandered most of theirs away like they have been doing the majority of the season. No excuse for getting a runner to third with no outs like the Tigers did in the 9th and not getting him in or for not finding a way to score with 1 outs and the bases loaded.

The Tigers deserved absolutely nothing with the way they played down the stretch. All they had to do was take care of business against the likes of Kansas City and Chicago, they choked. The Twins did what they had to do down the stretch the Tigers didn't, as simple as that.
