Re: The Hall of Fame question
I still don't like McGwire because I only see him as a home run hitter that could walk. Same with Sosa.
Bonds was the complete package, so yes. I think he belongs.
Clemens belongs.
Rodriguez already belongs."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: The Hall of Fame question
Yea I agree wasn't McGwire a career .267 hitter? and Sosa was a career .273 hitter I believe. Kin of ugly statistics for hall of fame credentials.Comment

Re: The Hall of Fame question
I don't think hitting for average is a must. McGwire and Sosa were expected to hit bombs and drive in runs.
I don't like that Sosa wasn't really a good OBP guy despite his power. And though average isn't everything, it should be something. A guy should be able to hit for average if he isn't at least capable of walking at a great rate. Dunn hits as poorly as Sosa, but also has an OBP much greater than him. Dunn, is the better overall player. That's how I see it.
I mean, we're comparing these guys to the power era here and the power era wasn't just about hitting homeruns. Rafael Palmeiro is a better HOF candidate than Sosa.
Obviously, this is my opinion and mine only. I completely understand why someone will disagree.
edit: Oops, forgot to say that I would probably consider McGwire before either. He's actually not a bad choice. I have to think about him a bit more.Last edited by CMH; 10-14-2009, 03:33 PM."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Re: The Hall of Fame question
looking at the stats sosa drove in 100+ runs 8 consecutive seasons led the league in RBI's twice and home runs twice 9 consecutive seasons with 35+ homeruns including 3 60+ home run seasons that says hall of fame steriods or not. he was a run producer that was his job not to hit for an average.
