When was the last time we had 5 guys voted in by the writers?
This happens every year. Voters who reveal their picks early always skew towards big Hall, analytics, PED-agnostic thinking. Voters who reveal post-announcement (or never) favour 3000 hits, the eye test, "clutchness", and hate anyone associated with steroid rumours (except for Big Papi).

Beltre is a lock, Helton is probable, Wagner will either make or miss by a whisker, Mauer will have to wait a couple years, Sheff is never making it until Bonds, Clemens, et al are inducted.

41% of ballots tracked so far.

Beltre at 98.7%, Mauer and Helton around 83%, BILLY Wagner at about 80%.

In order to get in, Beltre needs 58% of remaining votes, Helton and Mauer 69%, Wagner 72%.

Sheffield right at 74.7%, so he'd need just over 75% of remaining votes to get in.

Sheffield has admitted he used the ''cream'' from BALCO when he played for Atlanta, but he also said he didn't know that it was a PED, he thought it was cortisone for healing surgical scars.

Dude also said HOF pitcher Mussina was at best a #2 starter and not an ace.

                Yeah, ok.

At this point if you are trying to figure out who the best players were from that era, the Hall of Fame is not the place to look. Not to beat a dead horse or anything.

Mildly surprised that Mauer made it on his first try, but I'm fine with it.

                    Beltre 95.1%
                    Helton 79.7%
                    Mauer 76.1%

                    Wagner 73.8%
                    Sheffield 63.9%
                    Andruw 61.6%
                    Beltran 57.1%

                    Everyone else finished under 35%

Wagner was 5 votes short, so he'll join Ichiro next year.

Kind of curious how Sabathia fares his 1st time on the ballot.

I was iffy about Helton at one time but I'm ok with it. But damn this list makes me feel old lol. I'm only 33. But it feels like yesterday Joe Mauer was on the cover of the Show.

Helton is definitely one who benefits from the "he had a normal non-steroid career arc" narrative. His power numbers fell off quick, but his average was good. He gets in because of the vacuum left by all the great players the Hall is ignoring on purpose. Best season he ever had was 5th in MVP voting.
