Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

Delgado is not a HOF, let's move on from that discussion.

McGriff had fringe to below average defense so his skillset is his bat. That said, I never viewed McGriff as a guy teams HAD to get out or else? It seems he was always viewed as a stabilizer where great players already existed (Gwynn, Sheffield, Justice, Chipper). I love the guy and that he consistently put up numbers (which is notable in itself) but he didn't scream elite.

Votto has similar WAR but he has an MVP and has pretty much been the main guy in Cincy (that had great years with Dusty Baker). I'd put the nod to Votto over McGriff.

It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.

If there were no strike in 1994, Mcgriff would have been enshrined in Coopertown ten years ago. Brian Kenny laid out the best case I,ve ever seen made for Mcgriff. I,mfully expecting his annoucement induction next month.

Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

McGriff vs Votto convo is one about advanced stats vs counting/old school stats. McGriff's counting stats say yes, his advanced stats say no. Votto is just the opposite.

I'd lean Votto considering he has an MVP plus a 2nd and 3rd and the same number of top 10 MVP finishes as McGriff who's highest finish was 4.

The stat the really highlights McGriff never really being a "best in the game" superstar here is peak war, which is taken in a 7 year span.

Average HOF 1B peak WAR 42.1. McGriff 36.0, Votto 46.9

Also even if you extrapolate McGriff's 94 season out and assume he plays all 162 games and produced his average .04WAR/game it only adds 1.96 to his total. if you take his .3 HRs per game clip and add it to his 34, he would have hit 14.7 more. Rounding up 15+493 gives him 508 Career HRs. It also would have saved us all the pain of watching him attempt to get the last 7 he felt he needed in a TB uniform when he had completely lost it.

I think McGriff gets in on the veterans committee, I think Votto gets in mid-late ballot.

See what we're all forgetting here is the lesser known rule that anyone involved with this team is automatically barred from the HOF.

Canseco was made for that uniform and those sick shades. And Greg Vaughn had one of the coolest HR swings ever.

HOF announcement from the veterans committee...
                  Unanimously voted for Fred McGriff!

                  Nobody else voted in

What hat will he go in with? I'd guess Braves, though he also spent 5 years with Jays and Rays, and is from Tampa.

We got him from SD. I would assume he goes in under the hat he won a WS with, which would be us, not to mention the Jays traded him. Granted the Jays got a WS out of the trade as well, but still, we traded for him.

He'll go in as a Brave, and rightly so. I hope the Jays honour him at some point this coming season, though. Who doesn't love the Crime Dog?

Jays play Atlanta at home in May, they could always do it then.

I'm really surprised by Schilling. He got 71 per cent of the writers vote one year. I know he has offended a lot of people but he's never been accused of cheating (to my knowledge).

It's all about political BS. They just don't want to give him a platform. It's dumb as hell. He does seem like a total jerk, but I don't care. In a world where Fred McGriff is in the hall, Schilling should definitely be in. This gatekeeping is becoming more and more dated and out of touch the lower baseball sinks in popularity among top sports in America. The HoF is not a church.
