Albert Belle was Manny Ramirez with an abbreviated career. People have lack of playing time concerns with Larry Walker/Edgar Martinez and yet Belle racked up 1,500-2,000 fewer plate appearances than those guys. Hall of Fame prime, but he didn't hang around long around.

Brett Boone? Had a really nice stretch offensively in the early 00's, and was arguably the best defensive 2B of his era.

If the Hall of Fame had a special section for guys who were momentarily great players, sure.

I have no idea if he used PEDs, but the transformation from pumpkin to all-around force back to pumpkin and out of the game was pretty remarkable.

Might make for a compelling wing of the HOF, I don't know.

Why did Belle retire? I read it's because of his hip but...his last season with Baltimore was still good and he was two years removed from a .941 OPS season.

On a related but unrelated point:

Kindly reminds me of Jermaine Dye..he was still a productive player but had a horrible 2nd half in 2009 and that was it. In Dye's circumstance though, no team would sign him.

He had developed osteoarthritis in his hip. 10 straight years he put up more then impressive numbers, too bad he didn't do anything else real well. 4 years with a ops over 1.000, pretty tremendous.

Back to Beltran, after an abysmal start, he's been the Yankees's most consistent hitter so far, he's padding his resume, as we speak.

He needs to. I would probably vote for him, but I don't think he's very close to being a lock. Some of his more relevant career accomplishments:

                      2362 Games
                      10144 PA
                      2509 Hits
                      406 HR
                      311 SB
                      515 2B
                      .280/.354/.491 regular season
.332/.441/.674 w/16 HR in 52 playoff games (his 2004 playoffs tho)
                      120 wRC+
                      66.9 fWAR / 68.9 bWAR
1479 R and RBI (weird coincidence)
                      AL ROY in 1999
                      8x All Star
                      141 OF assists (active leader)
JAWS: 68.9/44.3/56.6 vs avg HoF CF 71.1/44.5/57.8

Kind of amazing how this once 5-tool player has given back so much defensive value in recent years that he's neutralized all of his career defensive value per FanGraphs.

I'll never forget his short stint with the Twins and how excited my friends were that we picked him up off waivers. I laughed at them then, and I laugh at them now. Come to find out he was drunk his entire time here.

Bret Boone and "Hall of Fame" should never be mentioned in the same sentence again.

Also, lets get Edgar Martinez in the HOF. He was one of the best pure hitters of his era or any other for that matter. It's a joke he isn't in yet, and all due to the anti-DH bias.

Bret Boone was a non-pumpkin for 3 years in his career. Ortiz has been a really good player for the better part of the last 14 seasons.

Boone was good when he was a Red, just not as good as he was when he got to Seaatle, lets not pretend he was some kind of bum.

He combined for 4 WAR in his 5 seasons with the Reds. He had a -0.2 WAR in 152 games the year before he joined Seattle. No, he wasn't a very good player then. Yes, he was a journeyman scrub.

How he managed to turn into one of the best players in baseball from 2001-2003 while playing half his games in RHB-destroying Safeco Field is one of the great mysteries of the universe.
