    • Mystery player X played 17 years (with only 14 really being full seasons).

    • Mystery Player X had 1776 hits (c'mon what could be more American than that!) and 339 of those were HRs to go with 270 doubles.

    • Mystery Player X had a career triple slash of .266/.361/.462 for a career .822 OPS.

    • Mystery Player X hit 30+ HRs 4 times and drove in 100+ 3 times.

    • Mystery Player X won 1 MVP and came in the top 2 in MVP voting in another year and the top 3 in MVP voting in a 3rd year. He also led MLB in slugging % in a year other than any of those seasons.

    • Mystery Player X had a career OPS+ of 134, with best years of 176, 163, 160, 158, 154, and 138, with 5 other years of > 120.

    • Mystery Player X drove in 1187 runs, scored 889 runs, and walked 1001 times.

    • Mystery Player X played in 4 World Series, with his team winning 2.

    • Mystery Player X is...clutch? 55th all-time in WPA with 40.3 wins added.

OK, so not knowing his name or position, would you say this Mystery Player X is...

    -a 1st ballot HoF lock
-a likely HoFer that will take some time to get in
-a borderline, 50/50 guy with better luck with the veteran's committee
-a fringe candidate (might sniff 5% in his 1st year of eligibility)
-a lock to be off the ballot after the 1st year

    ??
Without knowing his name or position, I'd say Mystery Player X serves a nice pit beef sandwich.

      Position would help too.

I would say he would fall under the "fringe candidate" category. Very solid career and will probably get a few votes, but will be short lived on the ballot. His triple slash really hurts him and doesn't really have any HOF caliber numbers to help make up for it.

It's hard to evaluate without beautiful fangraphs stats, but I'd say fringe 5%.

Pretty impressive. The mystery player was Boog Powell of the 60s and 70s O's. Powell played 1B and LF and was bounced from the ballot in his 1st year of eligibility with 1.3% in 1983.

He put up some truly impressive numbers before they lowered the mound--problem for him is he was actually worse after they lowered the mound (actually 1970), so from his age 30 season until he retired, he wasn't so impressive. If he could've replayed 1969 for a few years, he would've been in the HoF.

In fairness to Powell, he played roughly 40% of his career in the worst offensive environment since the deadball era.

Powell put up a very good, if unspectacular, 134 OPS+ at the two premier run-producing positions in the game, and, as far as I can tell, was not a good defender or baserunner. Throw in his lack of longevity and he's an obvious no for me.

Boog Powell, that is a name you didn't hear very much. I have a baseball card of his, if that's not random. I liked Dr Jones hint, very clever.

Boog Powell was a stud and a huge part of the O's dynasty of the late 1960's/early 1970's. He's a HOF'r no doubt in my mind...

Went to a game at Camden Yards in 2009, so of course I had to visit Boog's BBQ. Boog signs autographs while you wait for your food order, it's a pretty sweet deal.

Knowing who it is now and I can look him up properly, I'd say Powell comes close, but no. 134 wRC+, .365 wOBA, good K/BB, very good player. Just not quite.

Boy, was I treated to a gem at my first game at Camden Yards. I became a Nick Markakis fan overnight. And was a diehard Orioles fan for the night lol, I pulled so hard for them against the Red Sox, and for them to come back from nine runs down!! That was insane. I let Papelbon have it too haha. Nice. Mine was a Red Sox game as well, but a month later, and Boston won 6-5. It was a day or two after Big Papi was revealed to have tested PED-positive in 2003, so it was a... lively crowd. John Smoltz (!) got the win for Boston.

I know I'm getting old when Atlanta's Big Three are all retired. Smoltz was great.
