    Chewing

I noticed Ryan Howard chewing tobacco tonight and I thought about why so many baseball players chew. I don't really understand.

Very simple reason, You get your nicotine without hurting your run time or Cardio. I dip (nasty habit i picked up in the Army) so I notice just about every player who does. Nick Swisher pretty much always has a huge dip in.

Why is it so prevalent in baseball as compared to other sports? Since they're sitting around more than in other sports or something?

I'm sure there's plenty of people who do it in other sports, but they're not going to let you spit on the floor in basketball. I'm sure no one likes being tackled into dip spit on the football field. It doesn't really affect anything in baseball in regards to the field, and it's allowed. I'm sure it becomes habit, like some people always have to smoke when they drink. I'm guessing it's just habit that these players dip when they play baseball.

          That's my take on it..

It's true and with baseball it's pretty important to kind of calm down. My most successful days at the plate was days where I was chewing. I hate to say that chewing was the reason or whatever, it wasn't a HUGE sample size it was just kinda weird.

Apparently Howard didn't see the high school class film with the Black Hairy Tongue.

Definitely scared me away from the tobaccy.

I would love to see baseball players be able to walk into the batters box with a joint hanging from their mouth.

I have the mental image of Elijah Dukes walking up for his first cuts next year with a joint in his mouth, hands on the bat and settling in the batter's box while the umpire looks on in horror. This is awesome.

Congress is meddling in baseball affairs once again. And this time Roger Clemens is not involved. Legislature's next item on the docket is banning chewing tobacco from the major leagues, The Associated Press reports. Here's the argument put forth by former major leaguer and anti-tobacco advocate Joe Garagiola, who testified in the congressional hearing. "I would like the […]

Thank goodness only serious matters are being investigated! Smokeless tobacco is clearly one of the most important things going on nowadays...we wouldn't want little Johnny to start dipping now would we!!!

Football players dip a lot too, we just can't see it. Warren Sapp played with a dip in on every down. There are others as well. Basketball players, as mentioned earlier, can't be spitting on the floor so they're not gonna dip during a game. It's just a weird part of baseball tradition for some reason.

I love the scene in The Sandlot where everybody pukes on the carnival ride with their chewing tobacco. lol
