On matters of race we have become a very selective and seem to point the finger at only selected people when it comes to race issues/statements that offend. It depends on who you are.
We have become so sensitive to things that are said that political correctness has taken over. Yet, on the other hand, we go into a rage the minute our "freedom of speech" is "taken away". Here again being selective to who is taking the "freedom of speech" away.
I blame the press and our elite for setting the tone of who the fingers should be pointed at. It causes us to argue over things that are really non-issues and keeps us divided even more. We can no longer fluff things off like what Dusty said with a "Dusty, you're nuts" and go about our business. We have to make a national issue out of it. I personally wasn't offended by what Dusty said.
I think he meant that, for example, kids coming up from the Dominican can handle the heat better than some white kid from Washington State. Now, people want his head on a platter and an apology. I hope he sticks to his guns and doesn't apologize.
I also want that the next time a white guys says something in the same vain for people to lighten up. But, the Jesse Jacksons of the world and other race-baiters will never let this die.
We need to choose our battles. This is like crying that the sky is falling. People start to not care about an issue after it is selectively brought up over and over again.

Reality is there are somethings blacks can say about other blacks and Italians can say about other Italians and so on down the line, that if said by another group might be offensive. Then in the case of a white guy saying the same thing as what Dusty said, I personally wouldn't have a problem with it, but others would. I think you are right in a lot of cases people need to lighten up, but on the other hand there are quite a few people who should probably take a few minutes to reflect on some of their beliefs when things like this get stirred up.
I don't even know what Politcally correct means except that people tend to use that term when they want to try and dismiss anothers opinion. "Oh, you are just being Politcally Correct" . Like that takes away the merit of someone's argument.
I personally agree with your analysis of what Dusty said and how he seems to have meant it.
However, I also feel that the people who are trying to make an issue out of this are just as bad or in some ways worse than the Jesse Jackson's of the world. At least in Jesse's case you can make the case of an underrepresnted and previously ,possibly still opressed minority.
It's hard to see how as a white male that anything Dusty said may have hurt me or anyother white guy in any way, so the Dusty is a racist talk is stupid.
