Speaking of closers, the Bucs just dealt Scott Sauerbeck to Boston for Brandon Lyon. Lyon had 9 saves for the BoSox as part of their bullpen-by-committee.

Littlefield is taking the right approach; he wants pitching back in EVERY deal. Quickest way to respectability is pitching and defense.

Expect to see the Buc's clean house this year. I hate to see it to my hometown club, but they're in financial problems and are probably going to unload just about everyone...

The only guy I don't want to see them unload is Ramirez. He's only 25, and you need at least one bat to build around.

Aramis had a tough season last year but he is coming back this year and he is starting to hit for power. He still needs work on his defense but I think he is a definate keeper

The sad thing is, this will be the THIRD rebuilding the team has gone through since the end of the Bonds era (1992).

The 1993 rebuilding included guys like Al Martin, Carlos Garcia, Steve Cooke, Jeff King, and Kevin Young (Round 1). They tried to stay competitive with Van Slyke still in CF and Jay Bell at SS. That group bombed.

The 1997 rebuilding started with a $9 million payroll and a team that actually competed in a weak division. The best record in this rebuilding phase was 79-83 in 1997, followed by a 78-83 mark in 1999. The 98 team fell to 68-93, and of course the 2001 debacle of 62-100. The 2002 team was just 72-89. Now, sitting at 44-52, this team only projects to finish at 74-88. So, rebuilding phase II has bombed.

The BIG difference in all of this is who is running the show now. Dave Littlefield seems to know what he's doing. Cam Bonifay didn't have a clue. Let's hope!

Cam Bonifay doomed the team with those idiot contracts. If only we could get someone to take Kendall, that'd take a lot of the problem away in one trade.
