    Re: HELP!!!!

I dunno... I played football for 6 years, and I got pretty good at thinking on the field. You have to be able to think a little bit... reading offensive or defensive alignments, changing routes, picking guys up in your zone.

I always thought football was a more mental game than people gave it credit for... it's not a bunch of dumb guys just running into eachother.

It is tough, definitily, but not as mental as baseball is.

        Re: HELP!!!!

I think the pitcher vs. batter battle in baseball is mental, but the rest of it is pretty cut and dry. You know where to throw the ball in a given situation... you know when to run on contact and when not to, etc.

I guess both involve alot of reading the opposition and reacting to what they throw at you... you have to be able to read a bunt attempt just like you have to be able to read a dime defense... different, yet same.

Tell my leg baseball isn't physical. We had a 3 man collision today and I nearly broke my leg. Me (CF), the LF and SS all merged on a blooper and no one called the ball because none of us could have caught it. As I looked up, our 5'10" 190 lb SS was running full speed towards me (running full speed) and I slid at the last second and took his legs out and the LF got in there somewhere.

              Re: HELP!!!!

You need to be pretty quick mentally in baseball too. A pitch takes less than a second to get to home plate. In that time you have to figure out what kind of pitch it is and figure where it will end up. Thats hard to do, but then you have to actually swing.

You might not think baseball is hard if someone is just throwing it 60 mph right over the middle but try hitting a 90 mph pitch that can also move a couple of feet

If you played football for 6 years, trust me, you stopped thinking and were playing on instinct. I switched positions one year and struggled for a few weeks because I was spending too much time thinking about my assignment rather than reacting to the play in front of me. Even the pros will struggle in a new system because they are trying to think there way through a play, trying to make sure they are in the right position. By the time they figure it out, oops, se ya.

                  Re: HELP!!!!

No, I'm pretty sure that I didn't stop thinking. We ran a pretty complicated defense, with linebackers firing and DE's dropping into coverage (3-4)... as an inside LB I had to read the offense and call blitz packages on the fly. That took some thought. Instinct takes you so far, but if you don't play smart, you might as well not even play at all.

i use this argument a lot in this situation

                    "it's not exciting"

name one other sport where the outcome of the game relies on one play, and that one play can happen 20 times in a row?

football- one hail mary @ the end
                    basketball- one last possession
BASEBALL - Bases loaded down 1 bottom of the ninth no outs. = # of pitches thrown from then on out = $&i! loads of excitment.

Ya man, definitily on about that aspect.

I consider baseball the tense-est sport in the world, just cuz it can all change with one swing of a bat.

                        Re: HELP!!!!

Two words regarding tension in baseball: NO CLOCK

You can't shoot the fouls, dump & chase, or kneel on the ball.

And as far as thought and football goes, I like to refer to it (though my friends laugh at me about it) as "full contact chess" because at the heart of it, that's what it basically is: 11 guys trying to out maneuver 11 other guys at top speed.

just to be clear, I never meant to say you don't have to think in football, or basketball

                          but let me add this
in football and basketball they are more or less team sports, baseball is very individualistic, so therefore there is more one on one kind of mentallity and yes other sports have it too, just wanted to clear that up
