Baseballs Next Phenom: Justin Upton or Jason Heyward?

Both phenomenal young talents who we'll be talking about for years to come. Similar ages, play the same position, and both are thought of to be the future of baseball. With that said, both will potentially be great, but which do you think has the generational type talent? Which will have a Griffey like impact? In fact, if you were an owner, and you had the option to chose one or the other to build your franchise around; Who are you picking, and why?

Seems like a discussion Baseball fans will be having for the next decade or so, so lets talk.

First off no one will ever ever again have a "griffey" like impact Griffey could have been the best player in the game EVER if he stayed healthy.

it is way too early in either of these guys career to see who will be better. heyward hasn't even registered an at-bat yet if i had to pick out of the blue i would probably go with heyward due to the fact that the braves scouts are always right with players potential that they draft

Can't say anything about Heyward yet except that he says and does the right things. His makeup is fantastic, so let's hope he lives up to the hype.

Nice JJ! Nice. But Upton and Heyward will both play for relevant teams this year...

I wanna say Heyward, because he'll get better coaching and be a lefty. Doesn't Upton strike out a lot?

Upton is already a very good player while Heyward hasn't registered an at-bat in the MLB, so I'd take Upton.

What teams they play for have nothing to do with it.

your partially wrong. if player A has better coaching and better lineup protection than Player B than player A usually outpreforms Player B

                  1. The Orioles were 7th in MLB in batting average, 6th in hits, 16th in home runs, and 6th in doubles. You obviously don't pay much attention to baseball because if you did, you'd know that offense was not our downfall.

                  2. Good players produce regardless of protection. Kthx. Vladimir Guerrero had little to no protection in Montreal. Todd Helton put up monster numbers with little help in Colorado. Who did Adrian Gonzalez have protecting him last year? Exactly.

Matt Wieters destroyed minor league hitting moreso than Upton or Heyward and did nothing to hurt his status when he had a .753 OPS in his first big league stint. He has every right to be in this discussion.

Matt Wieters and Justin Upton aren't comparable at all. Justin Upton was called up when he was 19, while Wieters wasn't called up until he was 23. Guess what? Justin Upton wont turn 23 until the latter parts of the year, so of course Wieters would have the superior minor league numbers considering Upton was playing in the big leagues while Wieters was playing small ball.

BTW, when you sample their first half seasons, Upton still has the superior numbers.

                    Mat Wieters 23 years old: 354 AB's - .288 avg/9 HR's/43 RBI's/0 SB's/.340 OBP/.720 OPS

                    Justin Upton 20 years old: 356 AB's - .250 avg/15 HR's/42 RBI's/1 SB's/.353 OBP/.816 OPS

Don't get me wrong, Wieters will be great, but I don't think he's the same tier as an Upton or Heyward.

Didn't you start a thread last year wailing about what a bust he had been? Ah...everyone's an optimist in the Spring.

Unfair argument considering Upton was drafted 2 years before Switch Hitting Jesus was. Wieters could've played in the minors in 2007 but didn't because his contract negotiations went until the last possible moment it could have.

It doesn't much matter when either was drafted, Upton is YOUNGER than Wieters, and his numbers trumped his in every meaningful category last season. Amazing thing is, Upton was 21, and Wieters was 23.

                            Considering Upton:

                            A) played a full season
                            B) has had over a year of ML experience

                            And Switch Hitting Jesus:

                            A) didn't get called up until May 29
                            B) was playing in his first season while trying to get used to managing an entire pitching staff

I'd sure as hell hope Upton beat SHJ in every major category.

                              Considering I:

Compared both of their first "half seasons", and Uptons numbers still trumped Weiters, you have no argument.

Btw, Upton was injured for a good part of season last year.
